Hot New Genesis GV60 Magma Spotted Partially Uncovered

Genesis is readying a new high-performance sub-brand called Magma, and one of its first offerings will be the GV60 electric crossover. We’ve seen the GV60 Magma testing on-track and out in public, but this is the first time we’ve had a good, uncamouflaged look at the spicy EV’s revised bodywork. Sans psychedelic wrap or thick black plastic, the front end of the GV60 looks like it borrows liberally from the Genesis X Gran Berlinetta Vision Gran Turismo concept, promising better aerodynamics and cooling for the high-po EV than its more plebeian sibling.

Aggro Looks For The Electric Crossover

Although much of the car remains camouflaged, the GV60 Magma in question showed off the entirety of its front end looking mighty production-friendly. The star of the show is a revised front clip featuring a prominent chin spoiler underneath an oversized primary air intake. The standard GV60’s smiling-frog grille design is gone, replaced with a huge, A-wing–style front fascia common to all the Magma concepts that makes great use of Genesis’ signature “G-matrix” mesh design. Flanking the central grille are a pair what look like air curtains or brake cooling ducts, while three oval air inlets on the car’s nose may provide additional thermal conditioning for the higher-performance motors and battery.

The front clip also includes downforce-generating dive planes on the leading edge of the front fender, with a pair of fins just behind the wheel to clean up airflow around the sides of the car. The rear of the GV60 Magma, still shielded in plastic, doesn’t betray much, but we think we can see a larger rear spoiler to enhance aerodynamics even further. Expect a flat underbody and massive diffuser to clean up airflow and reduce lift as well. Meanwhile, the wheels and tires look a bit more purposeful than the somewhat ornate rollers on the GV60 Performance, featuring a simpler design that looks similar to what’s found on the G70 sport sedan.

BMW and Mercedes will be keeping a close eye on this one.

What Evil Lies Under The Skin?

As for what powers the Genesis GV60 Magma, we’ll just have to guess. Its Hyundai Ioniq 5 N corporate cousin puts out a healthy 641 horsepower when its N Grin Boost mode is activated, and we suspect the GV60 will push things a bit further befitting its status as a premium offering – 650 hp would be an easy bar to clear, but Genesis could theoretically go Tesla Plaid–hunting if it uncorks 700 horses or more. Given the current GV60 Performance hustles to 60 miles per hour in less than 4 seconds with “only” 483 hp on offer, a Magma model should be remarkably quick indeed.

That thrust will probably come via a pair of electric motors, possibly the high-performance units from the Ioniq 5 N and possibly with some brand-specific coding to tweak their behavior a bit. The battery could be a carryover 77.4-kilowatt-hour unit, but an upgraded 84.0-kWh power source seems more likely. The Ioniq 5 N’s impressive battery management software could (and should) make the jump to the Magma, because it provides consistent performance even as the state of charge goes down.

Genesis Magma Sports Car Is Happening, But Something Else Needs To Occur First

Genesis’ Chief Creative Officer lays out plans for the Magma sub-brand, explaining how every model will be uniquely tailored, including a sports car.

We should see the first Genesis Magma product sometime this summer, and given how close the GV60 prototype looks to production, we suspect that’ll be the debut we’re waiting for. Finally, the BMW i4 M60, Tesla Model Y Performance, and Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV will have some company, and we suspect the Genesis Magma EV will give ’em hell.
