The tiny crossover becomes the first-ever city car to be fitted with a full hybrid powertrain

- The facelifted Toyota Aygo X features a more aggressive stance and a hybrid 1.5-liter engine.
- The electrified setup is significantly more powerful than its predecessor, with a combined 114 hp.
- The Aygo X is also available in a GR Sport trim with sportier looks and a sharper chassis setup.
The smallest member of the Toyota lineup has received a mid-lifecycle update, adopting hybrid tech, a more aggressive design, and a new GR Sport grade. The facelifted Aygo X is fitted with the self-charging hybrid powertrain of the larger Yaris, resulting in improved performance and reduced emissions.
Currently, city cars and urban crossovers are either ICE-powered, mild-hybrid, or fully electric. Toyota is the first automaker that takes the leap of faith, bringing a full hybrid setup to Europe’s A-Segment. This means that the Aygo X finally drops the old 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine, in favor of a hybrid 1.5-liter unit.

The largest and most powerful mill ever to be fitted in a production Aygo combines a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter engine with a single electric motor, producing 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS). This represents an increase of 43 (44 PS) compared to the non-electrified 1.0-liter engine of its predecessors. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via an e-CVT gearbox.
According to Toyota, the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration is completed in less than 10 seconds. More importantly, the CO2 emissions have been reduced to 86 g/km, which is the lowest among non-plug-in cars currently on sale. Besides the obvious benefits for the environment, having lower emissions in volume products like the Aygo X will help Toyota bring more ICE- powered GR models in Europe and the UK.

The fitment of the new engine was made possible by the GA-B architecture of the Aygo X which is shared with the Yaris and Yaris Cross. Still, Toyota had to stretch the front overhang by 76 mm (3 inches), increasing the overall length to 3,776 mm (148.7 inches), while retaining the same 2,430 mm (95.7 inches) wheelbase.
Visually, the updated Aygo X stands out from its predecessor thanks to its angrier face. The redesigned headlights are connected by a trim piece, joined by a massive grille on the front bumper. The rest of the bodywork is largely carried over from its predecessor that was introduced in 2021. Exceptions include the restyled hood and front fenders, the repositioning of the side indicators to the mirror caps, and a fresh color palette.
Quieter Cabin
Moving inside, a new 7-inch digital instrument cluster, redesigned climate controls, a standard electronic parking brake, wireless charging, and two USB-C charging ports. The infotainment display appears to be slightly tweaked, although it likely retains the 9-inch diameter in high-spec models.

Recycled plastic and fabrics have been used for the upholstery in an animal product-free cabin. Equipment also includes an upgraded Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite that will continue improving through over-the-air software updates.
Despite the electrification, Toyota claims there is no loss of storage capacity compared to the non-electrified Aygo X, with the same 231 lt (8.2 cubic feet) boot. Two stacks of battery cells are longitudinally positioned across the width of the floor beneath the rear seats, with the auxiliary battery repositioned under the load compartment.

All versions of the facelifted Aygo X sport a quieter cabin thanks to noise-reduction components such as dash silencers, bonnet insulation, an engine underbody cover, as well as an updated exhaust system and silencer. Furthermore, high-spec trims feature thicker window glass and extra soundproofing throughout the body.
An Aygo With GR Badges?
Last but not least, the Aygo X becomes the latest model to gain a GR Sport grade. The sportiest Aygo yet is visually distinguished by the special 18-inch alloy wheels, a different grille with a honeycomb pattern and faux intakes, and a few GR emblems inside-out. There is also an exclusive Mustard bi-tone shade with a black hood.
The GR Sport doesn’t bring extra power over the standard hybrid, but benefits from a new chassis setup. This includes retuned shock absorbers and coil springs, along a sharper setting for the electric power steering, resulting in a more exciting driving experience.
When Can I Buy One?
The market launch of the facelifted Toyota Aygo X is scheduled towards the end of the year in Europe and the UK markets. Pricing will be announced at a later date, although the hybrid tech will most likely make it significantly more expensive than its predecessor. Still, we expect a lower starting price than the slightly bigger Yaris Hybrid which currently starts at £23,445 ($31,700) in the UK.
