Besides ditching the wagon body style, the new XC70 is a plug-in hybrid

- China’s MITT has revealed new details about the upcoming Volvo XC70 plug-in hybrid.
- The crossover features a 1.5-liter engine and offers two battery options for buyers.
- A launch is set for later this year and the model will have 124 miles of electric range.
Volvo teased the XC70 earlier this month and now China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has fully revealed the model and provided a handful of specifications. This is hardly surprising as the crossover will be launched in China later this year, but Volvo will explore offering the vehicle in other markets.
Starting with the design, the XC70 follows in the footsteps of the EX90 and features streamlined styling as well as chiseled bodywork. While the crossover is an extended-range plug-in hybrid, it features a fully enclosed grille like an EV. However, there’s a large lower intake with an active grille shutter system that automatically adjusts to optimize cooling and aerodynamics.

The ‘grille’ is flanked by Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights, which reside above stacked Matrix LED headlights. We can also see a prominent sensor as well as a metallic strip that encompasses the vehicle.
Continuing down the sides, there’s flush-mounted door handles and aerodynamic wheels ranging in sizes from 19- to 21-inches. They’re joined by plastic body cladding, a fixed panoramic glass roof, and vertical taillights that flow into the liftgate. The model also has a minimalist spoiler and a relatively plain rear bumper.
The XC70 measures 189.6 inches (4,815 mm) long, 74.4 inches (1,890 mm) wide, and 65 inches (1,650 mm) tall with a wheelbase that spans 114 inches (2,895 mm). This means the crossover is 5.4 inches (137 mm) shorter than the XC90 and has a 3.5-inch (89 mm) smaller wheelbase.
Powertrain details are limited, but the XC70 will have a 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) 1.5-liter engine as well as a choice between lithium iron phosphate or ternary lithium-ion batteries. The crossover is also slated to weigh 5,600 lbs (2,540 kg) and have a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).
That doesn’t exactly sound like a thrilling setup, but Volvo has previously said the XC70 was designed to “meet the demand for longer-range plug-in hybrids in China.” As part of this effort, it rides on the SMA platform and has an electric-only range of up to 124 miles (200 km).
