The Muscle Car Market Just Sent A Brutal Message To New Hellcat Holdouts

  • This special edition Charger rocks a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with 807 hp and 707 lb-ft.
  • The original owner configured it in Pitch Black with 20-inch lightweight black wheels.
  • Several other ‘Last Call’ Charger and Challenger models have sold for under MSRP recently.

There was a time not long when special Hellcats were practically guaranteed lottery tickets for dealers and collectors. But that era might be winding down, especially if the market’s response to Dodge’s ‘Last Call’ models is any indication. One practically new example recently sold for well under MSRP, despite all the hype that was supposed to surround these final gas-powered muscle machines from Dodge.

The muscle car in question is a 2023 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody Jailbreak Last Call, which sounds less like a car and more like someone lost a bet trying to name it. It came with a sticker price of $101,305 but ended up going for $85,000. That’s still a hefty chunk of cash, but for anyone hoping to flip it for profit, this one probably stings more than it sells.

Obviously, the highlight of any Charger Hellcat is the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 which, in Redeye configuration, delivers 807 hp and 707 lb-ft (958 Nm) of torque. That’s the kind of output that makes tires rethink their life choices. Even the new Charger Daytona EV with its dual motors doesn’t get close to matching it in pure grunt, at least on paper.

Low Miles, Low Bids

This basically brand-new Hellcat, still wrapped in protective plastic, hit the auction block on Bring a Trailer with just 16 miles (26 km) on the clock and had been scooped up by the selling dealer earlier this year. No one’s saying what they paid for it, but let’s not kid ourselves, they weren’t buying it out of admiration for American muscle. This was a flip attempt, plain and simple, and clearly, the math didn’t work out.

As far as Last Call models go, this one is quite subtle as it’s painted in Pitch Black and sports black 20-inch alloy wheels. The only splash of color on the exterior is the bright pink front splitter guard, which should have been removed by the original dealership upon delivery, but, for whatever reason, many owners do like to keep them in place.

Being all black may let this Charger slip under the radar (that is, if you miss the huge airscoop at the hood, the huge wheels that partially hide the sizeable brakes, and the rear wing), and the interior is appointed in a similarly stealthy manner. It includes front and rear seats trimmed in black Laguna and Hammerhead Gray leather, as well as many parts, such as the steering wheel and headliner, trimmed in suede.

All pretty nice, if not on par with premium German offerings, but none of them comes even remotely close to the Dodge in terms of outright performance for the price.

Despite that, we’ve witnessed plenty of Last Call models sell for under their MSRPs over the past couple of months, so the hype Dodge dealers likely hoped they would stir up died quite quickly. What will be interesting to see is whether this trend will continue, or if the negative muted response to the new-gen Charger, which is so far only available as an EV, will encourage muscle car buyers to rethink their priorities, potentially driving up prices.
