The Hyundai Palisade Is Hot Property For All The Wrong Reasons

Hyundai’s three-row Palisade SUV has been a hit for the brand, and so has its twin, the Kia Telluride. It’s currently the fourth best-selling model in the automaker’s line-up, even with a completely new version launching soon. Unfortunately, a small selection of Palisades are hot for the wrong, and somewhat literal reason. Hyundai issued a recall for some of the SUVs due to a fire risk. So, if you have one of the affected SUVs, you should park it outside and away from buildings until it’s fixed.

Fortunately, Not Many Vehicles Are Affected

The recall only applies to Palisades built from February 3 to February 24 of this year. Hyundai puts the count of affected vehicles at just 620. So, the odds of having a Palisade affected by this recall are extremely low. Though if you bought yours very recently, you may want to check the details on your model to see when it was built and if it’s affected. Additionally, no fires or other incidents have been reported, nor has anyone been injured due to the issue in the recall. Of course, no one will want to be the first injury or incident, and that’s why you’ll want to keep the SUV outside until it’s fixed.

What Went Wrong

The source of the potential fire issue in the Palisade is the electric oil pump controller. According to Hyundai, some of the tooling used to assemble the controller was damaged at some point. That resulted in some of the controllers not having an effective seal against moisture. This can lead to moisture build-up in the controller, which in turn can cause a short on the circuit board and a possible fire. The supplier discovered the issue and alerted Hyundai, and Hyundai narrowed down which vehicles may have received the improperly sealed parts. Naturally, the damaged tooling was repaired, too.

Two three-row SUVS with a lot in common, but there are key differences.

As for the fix, it’s pretty straightforward. Owners of affected Palisades should take their SUVs to a local dealer. The dealer will then replace the old oil pump controller with a new one, as well as the associated wiring harness if necessary. The replacement is, of course, free of charge. Hyundai also noted that any previous repairs related to this issue that may have been done before the recall would be reimbursed.
