Volvo’s XC70 Is Returning As A PHEV, But Only For China

  • The new model is slightly larger and more spacious than the XC60.
  • Volvo says the model will be able to travel up to 124 miles on electric power.
  • Familiar design elements from other Volvo models are present on the XC70.

The Volvo family is about to welcome a new addition, but it’s not a BEV. Instead, Volvo’s latest SUV, dubbed the XC70, is a plug-in hybrid and has been previewed for the very first time. It’s initially being developed for the Chinese market in mind, but may also be sold in other markets in the future.

});

Volvo describes the XC70 as its first extended-range plug-in hybrid, although it’s far from its first PHEV. We do not yet have details about the SUV’s powertrain, but Volvo says it will be able to drive up to 200 km (124 miles) on electric power alone. Importantly, this is under the generous CLTC cycle, and the real-world range will be less.

Underpinning the XC70 is Volvo’s Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) that promises to support “fast charging capabilities.”

Like the original XC70, Volvo says this new model continues the legacy of being a versatile family car that’s “ready for all kinds of adventures.” It is slightly larger and more spacious than the XC60 and incorporates design elements from other Volvo models, including the all-electric EX90 and the more traditional combustion-powered XC90.

Dominating the front end are Volvo’s familiar Thor’s hammer LEDs and a large blacked-out grille with active shutters. It appears to have a slightly sleeker profile than the larger XC90, with a more steeply raked rear window, and includes C-shaped taillights integrated into the rear glass.

“The XC70 marks our strategic entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, a perfect bridge to full electrification,” Volvo president and chief executive Håkan Samuelsson said. “It enables us to maintain and develop a balanced product portfolio, while offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars. This is also an example of regionalisation, where we adapt to the local market needs.”

Volvo is promising to announce more details about the XC70 in the coming months.
