BMW Tuners Make The Tacoma’s Turbo Flutter Even Better

Toyota has finally made a Tacoma you can make faster. The days of expensive upgrades that made little difference are over. And the aftermarket is jumping all over the new Turbo Taco.

Burger Motorsports, a performance parts company better known for its work on German ubersedans, has just launched a new kit to help you get started. A well-priced cold air kit that gives the Tacoma more engine intake sound and helps lay the foundation for more extensive upgrades.

Free-Flowing Air Intake For Turbo Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma has always been reliable, but it has almost never been powerful. The long line of I4 and V6 engines could run until the end of time with little more than the occasional oil change. The problem was that, with just 159 horsepower for the beefiest 2.7-liter and a claimed 278 for the V6 that felt more like 200, they would take forever to get there.

Toyota fixed that with the fourth-gen Tacoma and its 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. The T24A-FTS makes the same 278 horsepower max as the old V6, but, crucially, it offers up to 317 lb-ft of torque. Get the Hybrid and you get even more, with the torque figure climbing to 465 lb-ft.

Burger claims that its new cold air intake flows 50 percent more air than stock, which it says delivers more horsepower. The intake makes a simple run, with dual air inlets pulling air from the side of the engine bay as well as the factory location.

Switching to this intake reduces restrictions in the system, Burger says. It also lets you fit one of the company’s red or blue oiled air filters in place of the stock unit.

You can see those filters bright and bold every time you open the hood, because the kit comes with a clear inspection window. And that cosmetic detail gives you a better look at what the purposes of a kit like this are. Because on a modern engine, it’s not likely that you get “huge power gains” as it claims – there is no printed dyno sheet with the product listing – but it is likely that you get a lot more noise.

And we love that extra noise. The whoosh and squeak of the Tacoma Trailhunter’s snorkel is one of the truck’s most endearing features. This gives you that same experience without spending all that cash and having to cut up your truck. And without having to hear the wind rip around the snorkel when you’re cruising down the highway.

Toyota Tacoma’s Recent Success Is A Warning Shot To Ford

Ford may be the king of full-size trucks, but the Tacoma is the prince of mid-size.

On the other hand, Burger sells some other parts that might make much better use of this intake. The company’s JB4 tuner for the Turbo Taco makes changes that let the engine use the extra air to the fullest. More boost, different fueling, and a claimed 60 horsepower to the wheels. For this claim, it has a dyno chart to back it up. Combine the two, and suddenly you have the beginnings of something really special: a much quicker and much more customizable truck that can even run on E85 fuel for even more power.

Both the intake and the tuner are a bit of a bargain. The intake has an MSRP of $279, and includes your choice of color for both filter and inlet tube. The tuner is $529. Both, of course, are listed as for competition use only.
