Electric Toyota FJ40: Your Grandpa’s Off-Roader Gets A Tesla Heart

  • The Land Cruiser FJ40 goes through a restoration process and swaps the old ICE for a zero-emission powertrain.
  • The off-roader is available with either a 215 hp electric motor and a manual gearbox, or with a Tesla-sourced 320 hp electric powertrain.
  • Inverted offers various customization options for the exterior while adding modern amenities in the cabin.

Inverted, a UK-based firm known for its electromoded Range Rovers, presented a new project based on the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. The classic off-roader from the ’60s gains a fully electric powertrain as part of a comprehensive restoration with plenty of personalization options for prospective buyers.

Beginning with the electromod portion of the project, the noisy internal combustion engine (ICE) of the donor SUV is swapped out for a single electric motor seamlessly integrated within the original gearbox. This motor produces 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and 250 lb-ft (339 Nm) of torque.

The Toyota’s manual shifter remains, albeit with smoother engagement in any gear and adjustable torque levels. Additionally, the driver can effortlessly switch between 2WD and 4WD, with the option of an electrically operated locking differential.

Those who want more power can choose the optional Tesla-sourced electric powertrain producing an even more impressive 320 hp (238 W / 324 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. However, this option is exclusively combined with permanent 4WD and eliminates the manual gearbox.

“Retaining the original transmission allows the gear shift to remain fully functional, but with a notable enhancement from Inverted being that the FJ can smoothly start in any gear, with varying levels of torque, courtesy of the electric motor,” explains the tuner.

Energy is stored in a 53 kWh battery pack, allowing a maximum driving range of 150 miles (241 km). The system is compatible with CCS chargers of up to 75 kW, going from 20 to 80 percent in 25 minutes. Chassis upgrades include an upgraded Old Man Emu suspension and large disc brakes from Toyota or Wilwood.

The build can be based on the short (FJ40), middle (FJ43), and long (FJ45) wheelbase versions of the Land Cruiser. These can be combined with a variety of body styles, including hardtop, soft top, station wagon, or pickup, in both left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) configurations.

Inverted begins by stripping the chassis down to bare metal. After a complete restoration, the off-roader is taken to concours condition, ready for the EV transplant. Throughout the process, owners can choose their desired spec for the exterior and the interior.

The cabin is upholstered in Bridge of Weir leather while receiving a custom center console and new floor mats. Equipment is upgraded with modern amenities like an infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, a Hi-Fi audio, a reversing camera, a new A/C and LED lights.

Harry Millington, Inverted founder, said: “The people who are ordering these vehicles will have their own vision of what they want to do, whether they want to jack it up and put some big wheels on it or keep it close to original. The beauty of this is you can have a short wheelbase, long wheelbase or one in between. Hard top, soft top, or a pickup truck. There’s loads of different versions of them and they’re all really cool.”

Pricing for the electrified Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 starts at £195,000 or $244,000 before taxes or any optional features.
