The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric van is more practical than many might initially consider, given it seems to lean very hard into the retro aesthetic. But it’s got three spacious rows of seating that can fold into a large boxy cargo area, and it has a reasonable all-electric range of more than 200 miles on a charge.
Despite its family-friendly amenities, it still seems like it’s the nostalgic design elements that are driving the first few quarters of VW ID. Buzz sales, and dealers are even being incentivized to lean into the retro vibe.

It’s Not VW USA’s Fault, It’s The Mothership In Wolfsburg’s
Due to production headaches back in Germany, where the VW ID. Buzz is so far produced, the U.S. was allocated mostly single-color versions of the van that were otherwise meant to be available with a two-tone paint job. While many customers have been lucky enough to get their hands on genuine two-tone factory models that are limited, others are willing to settle for a different solution, it would seem.

Volkswagen Modifies The ID. Buzz And It’s Awesome
A panel van has never looked so appealing.
“The single-tone vehicle doesn’t sell as quickly as the two-tone car,” said Hein Schafer, VW’s senior vice president of sales operations for the U.S. market. “As soon as the dealers dress them up and wrap them, we see them moving again,” Schafer said. The exec also reported a surprisingly high take rate for customers who buy over lease (at least for the EV market), but didn’t disclose specific figures.
Make The Wrap Cheaper, Says VW
VW is now offering dealers, at least near the West Coast of the U.S., a $1,500 reduced price for wrapping the single-toned vans into new two-tone schemes. The remaining cost is $1,500 (the wrap is otherwise $3,000 normally), and that could be passed on to the customer in some cases, it’s up to the dealership. It would seem there’s demand out there for it, though.

The ID. Buzz Is The Perfect Car To Save Volkswagen
VW is using the ID. Buzz to help car buyers see life half full, and in doing so, it’s leaning into what makes the ID. Buzz the car it needs right now.
Automotive News reports that VW has moved 1,162 ID. Buzz units in the fourth quarter of 2024, followed by 1,901 units of the van so far in 2025. Considering it’s an all-electric family van priced at just over $60,000, it’s moving units fairly well (it’s the brand’s priciest model in the U.S.). Overall, VW saw a boom of 7.1 percent sales growth in the first quarter of 2025 compared to last year.
