Mercedes-Benz Concept AMG GT Track Sport Teased

Mercedes-AMG has given us a first taste of a new member of its growing GT family of sports cars, and this one is shaping up to be the fastest yet. The Affalterbach tuner has released a series of teaser photos for what it’s calling the Concept AMG GT Track Sport – and it should make Porsche 911 GT3 RS owners a little nervous.

AMG boasts that the new GT variant has been designed to break records, presumably on the race track. While it isn’t likely to beat AMG’s own One hypercar – the current production car record holder at the Nürburgring – it could set new standards for cars with rear-wheel drive, assuming it comes with RWD. Currently, only the entry-level GT 43 is offered with RWD. All other GT variants stick with all-wheel drive.

Modifications Aimed At Track Performance

AMG’s new GT sports car arrived in the US for the 2024 model year and already includes the track-focused GT 63 Pro. Think of this existing variant as AMG’s rival to the Porsche 911 GT3, while judging from what we see in the teasers, the new variant will go up against the hardcore 911 GT3 RS.

The teaser photos reveal typical features aimed at significantly increasing downforce, like an extended front splitter and a huge rear wing with swan-neck struts and GT3 race car-style end plates. The special struts enable the attachment points to be on top of the wing, minimizing airflow over the wing’s underside – the area most vital to generating downforce.

The 2025 Mercedes-AMG GT Went Soft, And It’s Way Better For It

The AMG GT is heavier and more luxurious. Here’s why that’s a good thing.

It’s hard to gauge, but there also appear to be new vents in the hood and the front fenders, pointing to louvers being used on the latter – a feature AMG also used on the previous-generation GT Black Series flagship. The wheels are also shod with track-friendly Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

Interestingly, the former GT Black Series set a record for RWD cars around the ’Ring in 2020 with a time of 6:43.62, until the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with a Manthey kit beat it with a time of 6:43.30. The AWD AMG One’s time is a wild 6:29.

A New V8 May Be Coming

All that AMG has said about the concept is that it packs a V8 engine. The current twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 used in the GT delivers up to 603 hp in the GT 63 Pro, and when paired with a plug-in hybrid system in the GT 63 S E Performance, it produces a total of 805 hp. However, don’t expect AMG to use its heavy hybrid system for a model designed for ultimate track performance.

AMG is cooking up a new V8 engine – one with a flat-plane crankshaft and possibly a mild-hybrid system. This new V8 is expected to debut in a CLE 63 currently out testing in prototype form, but perhaps we’ll see it first in the Concept AMG GT Track Sport.

AMG hasn’t said when the concept will debut, but sometime later this year is likely, given the start of the teaser campaign. Any production version will likely be much further out, so don’t expect a model in showrooms until well into next year at the earliest.
