The muscle car segment is going through some rough times at the moment, with sales of the gas Ford Mustang slipping away, the electric version of the new Dodge Charger being a flop and the gas model taking forever to show up, and the drawn-out death of the Chevrolet Camaro, which bowed out last year with no announced plans for a replacement. That final note may be about to change, however, as company execs have dropped hints and the rumor mill has fired up over the possibility of an all-new sports car coming from Chevrolet in the next few years.

The Rumor Mill Is Churning
The latest rumor comes from Automotive News, which recently reported that “a sporty sedan is possible in 2028, but its powertrain and connection to the Camaro are uncertain.” We’ve reached out to Chevy for comment on that report and will update if we hear back. Previously, GM has claimed that the Camaro’s story is not over yet, suggesting that there was some sort of plan for the nameplate going forward. But this is the first indication that it could be a sedan.

The Camaro Is Dead, But Chevy Keeps Selling Them
The end of an era hasn’t quite ended yet.
Is A Camaro Sedan A Smart Move?
Offering the new Camaro as a four-door model would be better positioned against competition like the new Dodge Charger, which will be available as both a coupe and a sedan eventually, merging the old Challenger coupe offering into the Charger lineup. There have also been past reports of the possibility of a Ford Mustang sedan coming by the end of the decade, though those rumors have gone cold, and no prototypes have seemingly been spotted. Though there was a reported Mondeo sedan facelift model testing in the US earlier this year.
Another report from earlier this year indicated that GM had an internal debate over the business case of a new Camaro model, with plans being scrapped. However, more recently, GM President Mark Reuss commented that there could be a formula to follow for a new model: “…beauty– and a little bit of functionality and fun – all of that is important. If we were getting back into Camaro, that piece of it is really important. I think that would be a great formula, and we have the ability to do that.”
Will It Be Electric?
As for possible powertrains for a Camaro sedan or any future model, it’s likely GM would develop a gas model to keep up with competition and demand, and also stay true to the segment. GM execs have already commented that “nobody wants” an all-electric Corvette, and there’s likely similar sentiment now towards an all-electric Camaro, or at least going only electric. GM is the rare example of a company with a healthy lineup of EVs that are selling pretty well, so there could be an argument for an electric sedan. But it also doesn’t have to be called a Camaro.

Chevrolet Is Desperate To Make You Forget About The Camaro
Chevy regrets letting the Mustang have all the fun, but the loss of the Camaro is your ticket to paying less for something better.
Affordability will also likely be a factor in Chevrolet’s decision-making. If they can undercut competition and reintroduce something more people can afford – while still offering a fun-to-drive experience – the company could have a winner. It’s not clear what Reuss meant by the Camaro’s formula including “functionality,” which frankly sounds more like crossover or SUV talk to us. It could also mean a five-door liftback, or maybe he’s just thinking of something that can still fit golf clubs in the trunk.
We could find out something in the next couple of years. Stay tuned.
