The 2027 X5 eschews a traditional instrument cluster for an all-new Panoramic iDrive display

- Spy photographers have gotten a look inside the 2027 X5, ahead of a possible debut next year.
- There’s a new steering wheel, a Panoramic iDrive display, and an angular infotainment system.
- The redesigned crossover will offer gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen, and electric options.
BMW X5 prototypes have been a familiar sight in Germany and Northern Europe, but we haven’t gotten a good look inside. That’s finally changing as spy photographers managed to take a few snaps of the cabin.
While the interior is largely covered by black cloth, we can see the crossover will embrace Panoramic iDrive. This is a huge departure as the traditional instrument cluster has been replaced by a slender pillar-to-pillar display, which resides at the base of the windshield.

The prototype’s display looks terrible, but BMW has shown a more polished version that is broken up into three sections. There’s a digital instrument cluster in front of the driver as well as two other areas that can be customized with as many as six widgets.
These are slated to include everything from compass and weather widgets to ones showing audio and navigation information. We can also expect performance-related widgets such as a G Meter and a readout of the current power and torque output.

Elsewhere, there’s a new steering wheel with two-tone contrast stitching. While there isn’t much to see, the steering wheel will have haptic buttons that serve as a replacement for the iDrive controller.
The X5 also has a large central display, which appears to be housed in a bulky case to disguise its appearance. However, the angular lines reveal the display will have an interesting shape.
The infotainment system will run Operating System X, which promises to allow for greater personalization. We can also expect an improved Intelligent Personal Assistant, which uses Large Language Models to enable drivers to speak more naturally.
Additional details are hard to make out, but we can get a glimpse of new door panels with armrests that are angled downwards. We can also see a row of minimalist switchgear, which is positioned in front of the armrest.
The exterior adopts a bold new design that follows in the footsteps of the Neue Klasse X Concept. As a result, there’s a reimagined grille and headlight treatment.

We can also see a large lower intake and a four-tailpipe exhaust system. These, combined with the colorful steering wheel accents, suggest we could be looking at the new X5 M60i.
BMW has been tight-lipped about the upcoming model, but it’s expected to ride on an updated version of the CLAR platform, which incorporates some Neue Klasse features. The crossover is also slated to have gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen, and electric options. Rumors have also suggested there could be a range-extended iX5 REx with a combined range of around 621 miles (1,000 km).
