If you can’t wait to experience the new Dodge Charger with a gas engine instead of electric power, we’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good is that we’ve finally heard what it sounds like, and that it will get as hairy as a Charger should.
The bad news is that unless you’re a big fan of BMW or a certain very special Toyota, you might not like it. Because this six-cylinder makes the Detroit muscle car sound not unlike a Toyota Supra. It might be a tad deeper, but the sound should come as no surprise since we’re dealing with a DOHC inline-six. It’s not the Hemi we suspect so many Charger fans crave, but it’s not silent, either.
Dodge Charger Caught Sideways And Sonorous
Reddit user carrotnose258 posted a clip of the new Charger with a Hurricane I6 yesterday on Reddit, embedded below. In the clip, Dodge appears to be filming an ad for the new version of the car. How can we tell it’s an ad? Because the Detroit police officer watching the launch followed by a big drifty left turn didn’t immediately give pursuit. Also, note the drone flying directly behind the car.
We admittedly don’t get to hear much from the engine, but it’s enough to get a feel for the new car. If you were hoping for a deep Hemi V8 rumble, you’re not going to find it. If you were hoping for the burble of Chrysler’s old Slant 6 I6 engine, you’re not going to get that, either. Actually, if you’ve had any seat time in the Ram 1500 RHO, we get much the same vibe. Engineers are doing their best to tune the 3.0-liter engine for a deeper V8-like sound, because Detroit. But we can’t help thinking this might be better if the Dodge boys just embrace the I6 for what it is.

And it may eventually get an engine that rhymes with ‘elephant.”
At lower RPM, there’s a fairly deep burbling that tends to drone in a not-so-pleasant way. But, being a modern twin-turbo I6, it does emit a nice, raspy modern I6 howl as the revs climb. It’s not exactly loud, but we definitely get some Supra / BMW flavor from it. And why not? The BMW-built S58 found in cars like the M3 and Supra is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter I6.
Hurricane Charger Should Be At Dealers Soon
While we know it’s coming – the gas models were announced way back in early 2024 when the Charger Dayona EV debuted – we still haven’t seen anything official. But it must be close to going on sale, because Dodge wouldn’t risk it being captured outside and in the open like this otherwise. There are proving grounds and places far less populated than downtown Detroit to nab some footage. Then again, Dodge is billing the Charger as a muscle car. If you want to do some neat ads, you could do worse than getting sideways in the Motor City.
We also know that Dodge has started building the Sixpack Charger. The ICE models in two-door form started rolling off the line in Windsor last month. The four-door versions are expected to start soon as well. Allowing for a few weeks to tool-up and build the pre-production cars, then build real ones and then ship them to dealers, you’re probably looking at mid-to-late August.

The Charger Sixpack is going to be here soon: here are some key facts about it.
Mid-August means the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights drag racing. The former is a celebration of all cars, the latter a Dodge-sponsored performance event where Chargers have been revealed before. It’s the perfect place to unleash the 550-horsepower Hurricane HO-powered Dodge Charger.
Sorry, no Hemi yet. We’re not sure one’s coming, though the change of heart at Ram regarding the V8 in its trucks has people hopeful.
Gas engines should make the Charger cheaper than the Charger Daytona. Based on the window sticker, that is. The Charger Daytona starts at $59,995, though it has recently been discontinued because of a lack of demand. The $73,895 Scat Pack is now the entry point. A gas engine could drop the base price by at least a few thousand, which might kick-start sales as much as the new engine will kick-start your hearts.
