Subaru UK Officially Changes Name Of 2026 Trailseeker EV To E-Outback

Manufacturers changing the names of their products isn’t that unusual. Indeed, fans of Marathon bars (now Snickers), Brand’s Drink (Pepsi), and, closer to home, the Buick Allure/Lacrosse will attest. Now, Subaru adds its name to that list as the Japanese marque confirms its all-electric Trailseeker will be marketed as the E-Outlook in the UK.

Revealed earlier this year ahead of a full launch in 2026 in the United States, the E-Outback/Trailseeker is an expected cornerstone of Subaru’s plans to expand its EV line-up in Europe. The electric 4X4 will be joined by a new-for-2026 Solterra and the new, Uncharted compact e-SUV next year. However, while the Trailseeker will continue to be marketed as such in North America, the 4×4’s name will be changed to the E-Outback in the UK at least. Whether it remains that for other markets is unknown.

It Only Took Five Years For Subaru To Settle A Lawsuit Against Its Best-Sellers

Subaru was alleged to have willingly concealed defects on Forester, Outback, Legacy, and Ascent models.

Why The Change Was Made

Officially, the Trailseeker name-change pays tribute to the Outback’s 30-year legacy. Understandable, given that the crossover is the electric equivalent to Subaru’s best-selling model worldwide and could thus benefit massively from three decades of accrued goodwill. The decision could also, at a stretch, be an attempt by Subaru to distance the E-OutTrailBackSeeker from Honda’s “most off-road capable” TrailSport trim on the Prologue and the Pilot.

When marketing a brand-new and relatively rugged electric off-roader, why remind customers, even tangentially, of an arguably more established, alternative trim you can buy? And we haven’t even mentioned the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which admittedly isn’t sold in the UK. There’s also the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, so yes, the market is presently flooded with trail-branded vehicles. Now that we think about it, perhaps The Trailseeker should be E-Outback in the States, too.

Subaru, however, may want to take notes from Mercedes and Audi. In an effort to quell indifference from potential buyers, both brands have quietly started dropping the EQ and E-Tron names from their respective electric lineups. The whole trend of emphasizing a vehicle being electric is quickly (and mercifully) coming to an end.

The 2026 Trailseeker Is America’s Most Powerful Subaru Ever

With up to 375 horsepower and 260 miles of range, the Trailseeker is a longer, more spacious, more powerful Solterra.

What We Know About The Trailseeker

As the first all-electric model developed in-house by Subaru, the Trailseeker differs from both the Solterra and the new Uncharted, the development of which leaned heavily on engineering partner Toyota: the former is twinned with the bZ4X, while the latter is based on the C-HR+. Though all three share the same e-Subaru Global Platform, up to 70 percent of the components on the Trailseeker are new. The model will also be built at Subaru’s Gunma facility in Japan (the Solterra is built on a joint production line with the bZ4X).

Two electric motors – both on the front – produce an estimated 375 combined horsepower output. A smaller e-motor at the rear enables all-wheel drive. Consequently, the Trailseeker can hit 62 mph from standstill in a Toyota GR Supra-esque 4.4 seconds, almost a second quicker than the Honda Prologue and/or Chevrolet Trailblazer EV it will rival. A manufacturer-estimated 260 miles of range is expected from the 74.7-kilowatt-hour battery, while a recharge from 10 to 80 percent should take less than 35 minutes. US prices have yet to be confirmed, although it’s expected the Trailseeker will be available from between $45,000 to $50,000.
