Ford is showing off an electric Bronco SUV for the first time. But if you’re worried it will replace your mighty 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 or the four-cylinder with a stick, you don’t need to be. At least not right away. New photos revealed earlier this week show an SUV that looks like a Bronco Sport, but this is not a tiny crossover. In fact, it appears a bit bigger than a regular Bronco. And it’s a lot heavier, because it’s fully electric. And it’s coming soon … to China.

It’s Like A Bronco Sport After Fat Bear Week
Yes, the model that Ford first showed in renders posted to its site in China bears a striking resemblance to the Bronco Sport. Without scale, we’d have believed it was a second generation of that model, minus the tires, at least. But according to information from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, it’s far from that.
According to the Ministry, this Bronco measures 116.1 inches between the wheels, about the same as the US Bronco SUV (which is also sold in China). It’s 197.8 inches overall, which makes it nearly 9 inches longer than a Bronco and just over two feet longer than a Bronco Sport (which is not sold in China). It’s wider, too, though not by as much. This is a Bronco Sport that’s been scarfing down salmon ahead of the winter freeze, not a little crossover like the Sport.

Thank God The Ford Bronco Didn’t Turn Into Some Of These Crazy Concepts
Ford has produced many concept versions of its Bronco, and some have been more intriguing or controversial than others. Let’s take a closer look.
While Ford China will offer it as a fully electric model, it will also offer this new Bronco as a range-extended hybrid. The EV tips the scales at 5,800 pounds, while the PHEV will be 5,500. Both of those are significantly heavier than the US-spec Bronco four-door, which comes in between 4,661 and 5,320 pounds depending on the equipment.
Loads Of Power And Plenty Of Range
There are conflicting reports on how much power the two models will deliver, but we’re choosing to believe the more powerful of the claims. That’s mostly because the low-power models are usually front-wheel drive, and frankly, that seems unconscionable on a Bronco. As such, we expect the EV will have 445 horsepower from its electric motors, while the big 105.4-kWh battery pack will deliver up to 403 miles of charge on the CLTC test. The range extender pairs a 1.5-liter gas engine with its motors to make 416 horsepower. It has a 44-kWh battery that should give it 137 miles of range, or up to 758 miles if you run the gas tank dry as well.
We can tell from the photos that this SUV will have advanced driver assistance systems as well. There is a LiDAR sensor clearly visible over the front windshield, for one. There are also sensors and possibly cameras visible in the front fenders.

The two different battery packs are said to be sourced from Chinese supplier FinDreams, a subsidiary of BYD. Production of the vehicle will be handled by Jiangling-Ford, one of Ford’s joint ventures in the country. JMC already builds multiple vehicles for Ford in China, including the Equator and Territory crossovers as well as a version of the current US-spec Bronco that is sold in China already.
It’s not confirmed, but we expect Ford to call this the Bronco New Energy or something similar. New Energy Vehicles is the term in China that is used for PHEV and EV models.
