Porsche’s V10 Legend Needed A Tree-Clearing Rescue

While the Carrera GT should be repairable, getting it fixed will no doubt cost the owner dearly

 Porsche’s V10 Legend Needed A Tree-Clearing Rescue

  • A Fayence Yellow Porsche Carrera GT crashed on slippery roads in the Austrian Alps.
  • Local firefighters spent over three hours recovering the GT from a steep embankment.
  • Only 89 examples of the Carrera GT were built in this yellow color, adding to the car’s rarity.

There’s nothing quite like driving a sports car on a twisty mountain road. However, things can turn sideways very quickly, and that’s exactly what happened to a Porsche Carrera GT and its driver in Austria recently.

While cruising along a narrow road near the Austrian Alps, the car went off the edge of a narrow road, causing significant damage to it and the surrounding shrubbery. If you think you’re having a bad day, spare a thought for this car’s owner.

The crash occurred near Strobl at the foothills of the Alps over the weekend. Local authorities didn’t say exactly how the accident occurred, but it’s not hard to imagine what went down. It looks to have been raining, the roads were narrow, and the driver most likely either understeered or oversteered going around a corner.

Even though Porsche’s last analogue hypercar does have anti-spin but not a stability control system, it won’t help you out if you much if things go wrong – and, besides, no tech can overcome the laws of physics anyway, no matter how advanced it may be.

In any case, images shared to social media by the local fire department show the aftermath of the incident, which, sadly, is a badly damaged Carrera GT. The car appears to have slid down an embankment, with its rear end pointing downwards.

Getting the car back onto solid ground was no easy task. According to Salzburg ORF, authorities had to call in specialists to avoid damaging the expensive carbon fiber monocoque of the Porsche. They also had to cut down multiple trees to create a clear path so the car could be pulled free. With so much work needed, it’s no surprise that recovery took more than 3 hours.

Images reveal that one of the quarter panels has been ripped clean off, and the rear end has been crushed. Repairing the car should be possible, but most definitely come with a hefty bill. It’s understood this is a German-registered Carrera GT, and both the driver and passenger were Singaporeans.

Porsche built 1,270 examples of the Carrera GT, and just 89 are thought to be painted in Fayence Yellow like this one. Not the rarest of hypercars, then, but one of the most iconic ever and, thus, highly unlikely to be written off – but it’ll always have a black mark on its report.
