The 2027 Volkswagen ID.4 Will Get Some Physical Controls Back

Volkswagen chose the ID.4 to be its first MEB platform EV. The ID.4 wasn’t the sexiest or most creative choice; it looks like a bland, spacious VW crossover that happens to be electric. But bland, spacious crossovers are what buyers want from Volkswagen right now. And the ID.4 has sold relatively well by EV standards, when not subject to a stop-sale order.

It feels like just yesterday that the ID.4 came out. But it has been in production for more than four years now. VW has already refreshed it. And the brand is working on a next-generation model to replace it. According to Autocar, a new ID.4 is coming, likely in 2026 to debut for the 2027 model year. It will be a “completely different car.” And it may not be called the ID.4 at all.

And a lot harder to fall out of.

The New ID.4 Should Fix Its Most Annoying Feature

According to Autocar, the next-generation ID.4 will have an all-new interior with a new dashboard and user interface. That means the return of physical buttons and knobs to replace the loathed haptic controls and sliders in the current ID.4. A VW source told Autocar that the brand is “going to bring back a round knob for volume control.” The report does not mention whether VW will address the window controls.

The exterior will have a “lower and squatter stance” and share a design language with the ID.2all concept VW debuted in 2023. The trio of EV concepts VW debuted in Shanghai in April likely heralds the brand’s new design direction in China, which will be different from the one pursued in Europe and America.

The New Volkswagen ID. 4 Should Get More Range

The report didn’t have details about technical upgrades. However, the outlet’s sourcing indicates that there will be “efficiency and performance gains” from new electric motors and improved battery technology. It should get some of the tech VW used in the ID.7 sedan, now not coming to America, which delivered the equivalent of around 330 miles in EPA testing. Expect a bump from the current ID.4’s 291 miles of range in front-wheel drive spec and 263 miles with all-wheel drive.

The New Volkswagen ID.4 May Not Be Called the ID.4

Volkswagen, according to a report, will ditch the ID branding for future electric models, relying on tried and true model names from the brand’s lineage that resonate more. The Tiguan crossover is hardly a VW enthusiast favorite. But it has overtaken the Golf as the brand’s best-selling nameplate globally. The ID.4 is functionally the Tiguan but electric. Rumors suggest the ID.4 could just become the Tiguan EV or Tiguan Electric in the next generation.

That move would make a lot of sense. The success of ID. 4 likely stems from the vehicle’s nature and affordability rather than the ID branding per se. Having ID.4 makes little sense if the brand has no intention of launching any other alphanumeric EVs in America.
