Hyundai Ioniq 5 Owner Completes 12,000-Mile Journey To The Arctic Ocean

Hyundai is touting how an Ioniq 5 owner completed an EV road trip from Hyundai Canada’s head office in Markham, Ontario, to the shores of the Arctic Ocean in Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The journey captured immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences for hospitals as part of Hyundai Hope on Wheels, allowing young patients battling pediatric cancer to virtually explore Western Canada from their hospital rooms.

Patrick Nadeau is the Hyundai’s owner and a photographer by trade. One doesn’t simply embark on a journey to the arctic in an EV without a plan, and the whole two-month trip was documented for social media by Nadeau. It’s no surprise, then, that Hyundai is keen to extol the virtues of the Ioniq 5 on such a trip.

Giving The Middle Finger To Range Anxiety

The road trip went from Hyundai’s head office in Canada to the small hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk and back, covering 12,267 miles. According to Hyundai, Nadeau needed to charge 87 times for an average of 42 minutes each, costing $1,403 in Canadian currency which converts to approximately $1,030.67 USD. Charging at the beginning of the journey in Markham, which is just north of Toronto, wasn’t an issue. But Tuktoyaktuk is an Inuvialuit hamlet well past the Arctic Circle, and home to the only part of the Arctic Ocean connected to Canada by road.

Nadeau left on April 24 and reached Tuktoyaktuk on June 10, covering five provinces and two territories. That should give folks with range anxiety over a 200-mile road trip something to think about.

Hyundai

“Hyundai is fully committed to an all-electric future, and we are proud to offer Canada’s most awarded EV lineup. Our recent ranking as the number one brand for EV consideration in Canada in the latest J.D. Power report is a testament to this commitment. As a leader in electrification, we believe it’s our responsibility to educate our customers about EVs through various initiatives. This road trip to the Arctic Ocean further demonstrates that Hyundai electric vehicles are built for Canada’s tough conditions.”

– Steve Flamand, CEO of Hyundai Auto Canada.

Also according to Hyundai, the “100 percent electric, multiple-award-winning Ioniq 5 performed flawlessly, showcasing Hyundai EVs’ ability to overcome the unique challenges of Canada’s vast and rugged terrain, including unpredictable road conditions and limited charging infrastructure in remote areas.” Apparently, it was as easy as doing a little bit of planning, despite the scarcity of chargers in the northern part of the Canada.

The refreshed 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 gets multiple small improvements and a new off-road trim that make it better than ever.

Only One Problem, And It Wasn’t Charging

“I ended up being stuck in Dawson City for a few days because I needed to hop on a ferry that was not open yet due to high water levels. After reaching the Arctic Ocean, a part of the Alaska Highway was closed for a little while due to wildfires, which also delayed my trip,” Nadeau said.

As for the trip, he carried around 400 pounds of cargo, including camping gear, a full-size spare, and filming equipment.

Nadeau could have completed the trip quicker, but capturing content for Hyundai Hope on Wheels meant visiting locations on the way, including a week in Ucluelet on Vancouver Island. He still managed to complete an average of 1,000 kilometers per day, which translates to 621 miles. The vehicle used was a 2025 Ioniq 5 Preferred with the Ultimate package, with the only modification being a vibrant wrap for high visibility.
