Volkswagen Group’s EV Sales Shoot Up Nearly 50 Percent This year

Volkswagen’s shift to electric vehicles has been, shall we say, a bit of a clinic on what not to do. Massive delays, big recalls, and then customers just seeming uninterested in the models. But while automaker’s situation on EVs may have been a dire warning to other companies, it looks like things might be turning around. VW just published its global sales figures for the first half of 2025, and it turns out that EVs like the ID.4 are suddenly becoming much more popular.

VW’s EV deliveries are up 47% in the first half of this year. Electric vehicles now represent more than 10% of VW Group sales, with PHEV models getting a similar boost, up 41%. These are very noteworthy achievements.

Loads Of New Models Means More Demand

“The Volkswagen Group continues to have strong momentum thanks to many newly launched models. This applies especially to all-electric vehicles, with global deliveries up by around 50% in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year.”

– Marco Schubert, VW Group Executive for Sales

Volkswagen Group EV sales, which include VW, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, Seat, and Cupra models, grew 89% in Europe and were up 24% in the US. That balanced out the drop of 34% in China, as a sales boom and overproduction in the country industry-wide appears to be coming to an end.

Looking closer in Europe, 20% of VW Group sales in the western region are now fully electric. This isn’t just a short-term bump, either, as Schubert says orders for EVs are up as well, climbing 60% with buyers wanting EVs they can’t yet get.

Volkswagen Ready To Throw Out Its EV Identity For Something We All Know And Love

Volkswagen has a back-catalog of some of the industry’s most prestigious names, and it’s time to start using them instead of new EV names.

The total was 465,500 from January through June, up from 317,000 in the same period last year. The Group delivered 4.41 million vehicles of all types, a 1.3% climb from last year. While that’s spread across multiple brands, the total is bringing VW closer to EV sales champ Tesla, which moved 720,803 EVs in the first half of 2025. Another important bit of information here is that Tesla’s first half was a disaster, dropping from 830,766 in the first half of 2024.

Hey Volkswagen, This Is Your Sign To Bring Us The ID.3

Volkswagen’s bestseller was the ID.4/ID.5 combo at 84,900 units. The ID.3 was next at 60,700, with Audi’s Q4 e-tron at 44,600. That strong showing for the ID.3 might be a sign for Volkswagen as to what it could do to boost EV sales in the US.

The ID.3 electric is an EV slightly longer, taller, and wider than the Volkswagen Golf we’re used to. Standard models offer up to 341 miles of range on the WLTP cycle, and come with up to 201 horsepower. VW also has a go-fast hot hatch GTI equivalent called the GTX. That one has rear-wheel drive and gets up to 322 horsepower and 370 miles of range. It’s a seriously sporty model, and it’s one that feels like it could win over American sport compact shoppers.

The Volkswagen Golf Is No Longer The People’s Car It Once Was

With fewer than one-third of its former global sales, the Golf is a shell of its former self.

Volkswagen is also giving it special editions, like the Fire+Ice model that has just entered production. It’s a version that pays tribute to a very purple Golf from the 1990s and is a partnership with fashion brand Bogner. Dear VW, if you want to grow sales even more, maybe look at the ID.3 GTX. Just don’t make us wait until it gets boring like you did with the Buzz.
