Lucid Air Grand Touring Sets Guinness World Record For Longest Trip In An EV

A Lucid Air Grand Touring has claimed the world record for the longest distance traveled by a production electric vehicle on a single charge. A team managed to cover 1,205 kilometers, or about 749 miles, without stopping. So much for range anxiety.

The record was set last weekend and smashes the previous record of 1,045 km (649 miles), set only last month by a Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ driven by a separate team in Japan. The Lucid record took place in Europe, starting in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and ending in Munich, Germany. Therein lies the secret to achieving the record.

Some Help Along The Way

The choice of route would have played a major role in helping the Air Grand Touring cover almost 50 percent more than its official EPA-rated range estimate of 512 miles, which, incidentally, is the highest for any production EV. That’s from a 117-kWh battery with a usable capacity of 112 kWh.

St. Moritz is nestled in the Swiss Alps at an altitude of almost 6,000 feet above sea level, while the destination of Munich is only about 1,700 feet above sea level. This means there would have been a lot of descents – some potentially very steep – in which case the team, led by serial record-breaker Umit Sabanci, likely employed a lot of regenerative braking.

Lucid

All Lucid has said is that the team covered alpine roads, highways, and secondary roads, and used an Air Grand Touring fitted with the standard 19-inch wheels. We’ve reached out to the company for further information, including the team’s average speed, and will update the article accordingly.

This is actually the second record for Sabanci behind the wheel of a Lucid Air Grand Touring. In 2024, he set the record for the most countries visited on a single charge in a production EV, crossing a total of nine in Central Europe. Another of his records, set in 2022, was the fastest circumnavigation by scheduled airlines. He managed more than 23,000 miles in less than 48 hours.

With so many EVs now on the market, it can be tricky to find the most efficient. This is the most frugal EV currently on sale in the US.

This Is No Economy Car

What’s perhaps most impressive about the record is that the Air Grand Touring is one of the most luxurious and highest-performing sedans on the market. It currently starts at $110,900 and generates 819 horsepower from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain. It will also sprint from 0-60 mph in just three seconds flat, and with a suitable charger, can add 200 miles of range to its battery in 12 minutes.

Range anxiety remains a real concern for many EV owners, but Lucid continues to demonstrate that its Air can rival – and even surpass – sedans with internal-combustion engines when it comes to long-distance capability. With its recently launched Gravity, the company is now poised to set new benchmarks in the electric SUV segment as well.
