Jaguar Lost The Plot So Mitsuoka Picked It Up And Made A Whole Car

  • Mitsuoka Viewt Royal Edition features a retro design inspired by the 1963 Jaguar Mk2.
  • Powertrains include 1.0L, 1.5L petrol, and 1.5L hybrid engines shared with Toyota Yaris.
  • Pricing starts at $26,300 and production is limited with orders open until December 21.

There’s a certain charm to a car that refuses to blend in. Mitsuoka has built its reputation on doing things differently, from the outlandish Orochi made famous on Top Gear to the quirky Viewt, which has been trying to convince since 1993. Last year, the Viewt shifted platforms from the Nissan Micra/March to the Toyota Yaris, and now, the first special edition of this updated model is here.

adpushup.que.push(function() {

});

Named the Royal Edition, Mitsuoka is offering the car in three distinctive shades of Royal Green, Royal Red, and Royal White. For the most part, the design of the Royal Edition is the same as the regular Viewt, meaning it continues to resemble a Jaguar Mk2 from 1963, albeit with slightly enlarged proportions.

Like the standard car, the Royal Edition includes chrome front and rear bumpers. It also includes a new badge at the rear, helping to remind anyone who buys the car that this is no ordinary Mitsuoka product. And as before, exactly no people have been fooled into thinking it was actually a classic British car rather than a painful city car knock-off.

Like the base model, the Royal Edition features chrome front and rear bumpers. A new rear badge sets it apart slightly, signaling this isn’t your everyday Mitsuoka. That said, absolutely no one is going to mistake it for an actual vintage British sedan. It’s unmistakably a compact city car dressed up for a very specific kind of nostalgia.

All versions of the Royal Edition, regardless of the exterior color, have the same interior finish. This includes Royal Brown-colored artificial leather on the seats, door panels, and the lower part of the dashboard. The car also gives a subtle nod to its British-inspired design with a small union jack on the seats.

As the Viewt is based on the same TNGA-B architecture as the Yaris, it gets the same engine options. Buyers can choose between a 1.0-liter or 1.5-liter petrol engine, or opt for a 1.5-liter hybrid. The 1.0-liter version is front-wheel drive only and comes with a CVT.

The 1.5-liter petrol can be had with either a six-speed manual or a CVT, with a choice of front- or four-wheel drive. The hybrid version includes a CVT and is also available in both 2WD and 4WD configurations.

Mitsuoka is taking orders for the Viewt Royal Edition until December 21, though it hasn’t disclosed how many will be produced. Pricing starts at 3.85 million yen (around $26,300) and goes up to 5.1348 million yen (roughly $35,100), depending on configuration.
