Faraday Future Reveals New Infotainment System That Understands 50 Languages

Faraday Future has launched possibly the most advanced infotainment system we’ve seen yet for a production car with its new FF 91 2.0 upgrade. The AI-developed software, which makes its debut on the brand’s luxury FF 91 electric sedan, not only understands multiple languages in real time, but also understands the context of a command rather than simply reacting to keywords.

Bring A Trailer is auctioning a 6,200-mile Faraday Future FF91 2.0 Futurist at no reserve, and at $31,000 with six days left, it could go cheap.

It’s been developed to recognize when corrections are made, mid-sentence, by the cabin’s occupants. It’s essentially the closest thing we’ve got to KITT from Knight Rider in a production vehicle, or for the cherubs among you born this side of the millennium, it’s like having a less passive-aggressive Alexa in the cabin with you. Albeit one that’s eavesdropping more closely on your conversations.

Touted as the most significant upgrade for the FF 91 since the model’s launch in 2023, the FF 91 2.0-generation in-car infotainment software is the latest product from Faraday’s ongoing development of Open AI technology. It’s also said to be the first example of its kind offered in a production vehicle in North America.

What FF 91 2.0 Actually Does

Designed to make voice-activated commands in the cabin easier and less prone to errors, FF 91 2.0 is said to work in ways that were “never possible under traditional rule-based AI systems.” Unlike most conventional in-car systems, for example, the FF AI 2.0 can recognize more than 50 languages consecutively and in real time, and complete the requested action. For example, the commands in the above video trailer start in English then switch intermittently from Mandarin to Spanish, Arabic and Hindi.

Perhaps more impressively though, the system also understands what Faraday calls “conversational context,” meaning multiple commands at once. You could ask the system to open the windows, set the temperature on the climate control, and play music all in a single breath and it would respond accordingly. You could change your mind mid-sentence and it would figure things out. Change temp to 72… actually, 69… no, 68. In theory, FF AI 2.0 would end up at 68 degrees. We cannot guarantee it won’t eventually get angry at your indecisiveness and eventually kill you before wiping out all of humanity, though. We’re just kidding. That won’t happen. Probably.

In true Alexa fashion, cabin occupants activate the system by saying “Hey Faraday,” and can ask the system questions about the car or more abstract subjects like the weather and local news.

The startup EV automaker is known for its failed FF-91 electric luxury SUV and legal headaches with its owner.

How The System Works, And Where It Will Be Available

Rather than relying on just one operation for these complexities, Faraday utilizes three levels with a fourth effectively acting as a supervisor. The first, for example, monitors conversations in the cabin to gauge the sounds of the occupants’ voices. This helps FF 2.0 readily understand commands, complete with ‘uhm’s and filler words included. The second agent is all about speed, making sure commands and questions are addressed timely. The third is essentially Alexa as a Faraday encyclopedia. The fourth agent, meanwhile, makes sure all three work in tandem.

The FF 91 2.0 system will be featured on all subsequent FF 91 models and will, presumably, be retrofitted to existing models via over-the-air update. It will also be available for Faraday’s more budget-conscious ‘FX’ sub-brand. The latter currently includes the FX6 prototype, set to be available for between $20,000 to $50,000, and is expected to be joined by an FX5 saloon and a Super One MPV. The software will likely make its way to the upcoming (and already delayed) ‘Faraday X’ brand.
