The Knight Rider Historians have done it again. Somehow, these superfans tracked down a very special, very specific celebrity-owned car. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, the celebrity is The Hoff himself, David Hasselhoff. As for the car, it’s a 1985 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am – a vehicle not extraordinary on its own. But if you know Hoff and Knight Rider, you know this is very extraordinary car indeed. But perhaps not in the way you think.

A Brief History Of Knight Rider
For those who don’t know, Knight Rider was a television show that ran through the mid-1980s. Hasselhoff was the human star, sharing the screen with KITT, a crime-fighting, turbo-boosting sports car shaped like a third-generation Trans Am. There was a Knight Rider movie in the 1990s, and a generally terrible reboot in the late 2000s featuring a Mustang Shelby GT500. But none captivated so many people over the decades as the OG Trans-AM KITT and Michael Knight, a young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless, in a world of criminals who operate above the law. But you already know this. Everyone knows Knight Rider.
What you may not know is that, while Hasselhoff was driving blacked-out Trans Ams on the show, he was also driving them in real life. Per the Knight Rider Historians, Pontiac gave him three – two in 1983 and another one in 1985. The car featured in this video is the 1985 model, right down to the AREU WHO vanity license plates from California. And yes, it’s for sale. More on that in a moment.
How do the Historians know this is the Hoff’s car? For starters, there are old photos showing Hasselhoff sitting on the hood of an identical-looking car with the same vanity plate on it. That alone isn’t a smoking gun, but paperwork included with the car erases all doubt. There are documents showing he was the original owner and sold it in 1990. An official title transfer notice from 1990 has Hasselhoff’s name and signature on it, and there are photos showing the TV star standing with the new owner at that point. The Knight Rider Historians are “1,000%” sure this car is the real deal.
A Brief History Of The Hoff’s Trans Am
As for the actual car, it’s a well-optioned 1985 Trans Am with T-tops and a 5.0-liter V8 under the hood. It’s a four-speed automatic car, and while the mileage isn’t mentioned, it looks like 82,109 miles are showing on the odometer. It appears to be completely stock and in original, unrestored condition. The car reportedly spent its entire life in California and is rust-free, but the paint is noted as being sketchy in some spots. There are some issues with the interior as well, mostly fabric-related but apparently the stereo doesn’t work. And before you ask, no, it doesn’t have a Turbo Boost button.

David Hasselhoff’s Personal KITT Car From Knight Rider Is Worth $1 Million
Buy it and the Hoff will even personally deliver it to you.
It does have 30 years of receipts, though, courtesy of the person who bought it from Hasselhoff. He kept it until 2024, at which point it went to someone else. The Knight Rider Historians don’t explain exactly how they found it, but being the mega fans they are (they own several screen-used KITTs as well as the original semi-truck and trailer from the show) they bought the car before anyone had a chance to modify it.
Here’s How To Buy It
That brings us, finally, to it being for sale. The Historians don’t have the bandwidth to keep it, so they’re hoping to sell it to an enthusiast who’s keen on preserving this piece of Knight Rider / Hasselhoff history. The asking price is $39,995 – steep for a third-gen Trans Am that needs some love, but apparently it runs and drives great. And let’s be honest, this isn’t just another car. This was the Hoff’s car while he was filming Knight Rider. Next to owning a real screen-used KITT, this could be the next-best thing.
Details of the car and how to buy it are listed at the source link below. Anyone got some cash we can borrow?
