Trump Might Finally Force Audi’s Hand In America

  • Audi is said to be considering building a plant in the United States.
  • The facility would likely be built in the South and could cost $4.6 billion.
  • A decision hasn’t been made yet, but it could come later this year.

While German rivals BMW and Mercedes have established major factories in the United States, Audi has remained on the sidelines. However, with President Trump’s tariffs in play, the company may soon reconsider its strategy.

Even though we’ve heard rumblings about Audi building some vehicles in America – most likely at Volkswagen’s existing factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee – it appears an all-new plant is now on the table. That’s according to Spiegel, which said the move is being considered as part of an effort to placate President Trump.

Nothing appears to have been decided at this point, but the automaker is said to be considering a plant in the southern United States. It could cost up to $4.6 (£3.4 / €4) billion and would follow Scout’s factory, which is being built in Blythewood, South Carolina.

Speaking to Reuters, an Audi spokesperson confirmed the company is looking at a larger presence in the United States and said “We are currently examining various scenarios for this.” They added, “We are confident that we will make a decision this year in consultation with the [Volkswagen] Group on how this will look in concrete terms.”

Trump Might Finally Force Audi’s Hand In America

BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen have been pushing for a US-EU trade deal as they’re getting hammered by Trump’s tariffs. BMW is reportedly losing $11.5 (£8.6 / €10) million per day and they want that bleeding to stop.

Much of the focus has been on a so-called “export offsetting model,” which would weigh imports and exports of cars crossing the Atlantic. The Trump administration is also said to be eyeing increased U.S. investment, although specifics are hazy.
