• Ford is recalling thousands of 2025 Broncos over an airbag issue.
  • The passenger side airbag active vent flap may not deploy as intended.
  • Dealers will replace the passenger airbag module free of charge.

Another day, another Ford recall. However, there’s a little bit of good news as we’re only talking about one this time. That’s a sad sentiment, but the automaker is now recalling 2,272 Broncos from the 2025 model year.

According to the federal agency, some vehicles have a passenger side airbag that may not deploy as intended. This increases the risk of injury and means the SUV doesn’t comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Digging deeper into the safety recall report reveals the “active vent flap of the passenger airbag may not open during a crash that deploys the passenger airbag.” If this occurs, the “internal cushion pressure will not decrease as rapidly as designed, resulting in a higher-pressure cushion interacting with an occupant.”

Ford became aware of the problem in May after the airbag supplier – Joyson Safety Systems – informed them about an issue discovered during routine testing. This sparked an investigation, which eventually determined the “test anomalies” were associated with a broken plastic flange that holds the micro gas generator in place. In particular, the plastic flange can break when the airbag is deployed and apparently interfere with the active vent flap.

The problem was identified early on and the automaker isn’t aware of any warranty, field or customer reports related to the issue. However, it’s believed that roughly 28% of the recalled vehicles are impacted by the issue.

Owner notifications are slated to go out on July 28 and customers will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealership, where the passenger airbag module will be replaced free of charge. The new modules have “plastic flanges that meet specifications” and won’t impact the opening of the active vent flap.
