Lamborghini Won’t Give Up On Combustion Engines Anytime Soon

Shocking news from Lamborghini: The Italian supercar company, which lives and dies on how sharp its bodywork is and how much noise comes from its tailpipes, has a daring plan for the future of how its vehicles will be powered. The breaking story: Lamborghini will continue to deliver gasoline power for as long as it possibly can.

“If you speak about the future of combustion for sure, for us, we are aiming to continue as long as possible,” Lamborghini chief technical officer Rouven Mohr told a group of media (via CarExpert) at a tech briefing for the hybrid-powered Lamborghini Temerario.

Emotion Is Key To The Lamborghini Brand

“This is clear not because – you know, sometimes some colleagues say, ‘ah, it’s not so much about the old world’ – [but because] we still think that we have a lot of ideas to transport, let me say, the combustion future.”

Mohr said that creating passion, an emotional response to a vehicle, was more important for Lamborghini than for other brands. It makes sense for a brand that was created from an emotion, even if that emotion was fury at Enzo Ferrari.

In our segment […] we are the pinnacle of the emotions. The other brands that say they want to be the pinnacle in the lap time, they want to be the pinnacle in motorsport and brand heritage. We are the pinnacle in emotion – that’s what we’re aiming to be. You know, therefore, for us, it’s fundamental that we try to continue [internal combustion power].

Lamborghini Has Decided The Future Of The Raging Bull SUV

The Italian automaker is pretty content with the Urus right now.

The brand does still have an electric vehicle planned, but it is going to come much later than its main competitor. Ferrari is expected to launch its EV crossover in October 2025. Lamborghini has pushed back the production version of the Lanzador concept car until at least 2030.

Gas Power Doesn’t Mean No Hybrids

Lamborghini has and will go hybrid, though. Its first was the Revuelto. A car that paired a brand-new 6.5-liter V12 engine with three electric motors and a plug-in battery. The engine by itself produces 814 horsepower, more power per liter than any Lamborghini engine before. The motors boost power to 1,001 horsepower in total, and give it the ability to putter around on EV power in city centers.

The next hybrid supercar from the Italian automaker is the Temerario. The replacement for the Lamborghini Huracán uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that can spin to 10,000 rpm to provide the spine-tingling wail the car demands. This gas engine makes 789 horsepower, with its three electric motors raising the combined horsepower to 907 and giving the car its all-wheel drive.

Lamborghini Continues Blitzing Sales Records

Lamborghini had its best-ever sales year in 2024, putting more than 10,000 Raging Bulls in customers’ hands.

As for the Lanzador, the two-door off-roader is expected to make up to 2,000 horsepower from an electric platform it will share with Porsche. There will also be some input from Rimac, which is now the owner of Bugatti, and puts the automakers connected under the VW Group umbrella. Bentley and Audi are also expected to use the platform, though we’re sure none will do with it what Lamborghini will.
