There are all kinds of reasons to stay far away from a car that’s previously had a salvage title, especially a flood car. All sorts of mechanical and electrical gremlins can be lurking, even if a previous owner has gone through a lot of it. If that car is a high-end vehicle, such as a flagship luxury sedan or a supercar, those problems could increase exponentially in complexity and cost. That’s not to say there aren’t some potential benefits, though. Of course, those cars can be very cheap to start with, which makes them tempting and accessible. Furthermore, if it’s a particularly rare or desirable car, it has probably lost much of its value, so you can do things with it that previous owners probably never would have. That’s what YouTuber Mitchell Kohrmann is doing with his first-generation Audi R8, which has gone from Panama to Alaska with some weird stops in-between.
A Mess Of An Audi
Kohrmann is documenting his adventures with his first-generation Audi R8 with the V8 and dual-clutch automatic transmission, which he got in less than stellar condition. As he describes in his video repairing the car, it had a strange history. Apparently it was initially delivered to an owner in Panama before making its way to Florida where it was flooded in a hurricane. It went through a couple of owners including another YouTuber before reaching him. The video goes on to show the lengthy process of getting the R8 back in shape for a huge road trip. That includes removing the ugly wrap, fixing engine misfires, wonky transmission shifting, and doing general maintenance.
Potentially Going Where No R8 Has Gone Before
That big road trip is, of course, up to Alaska, starting from Kohrmann’s home in Ohio. The distance to Alaska came in at about 10,000 miles, and Kohrmann documents everything he runs across. He finds various wildlife, gorgeous storms, and has some amazing drone shots of lakes and mountains. He even ventures onto gravel paths occasionally. It is an all-wheel-drive Audi after all.
It’s a nice, chill watch, and so is the repair video. Each is a different flavor of car video, too, since the repair video is more technical and covers working in the garage, and the other is a road trip. So whether you choose to watch both, or just the one that fits your interests, you should have a good time.
