Statistically speaking, the place where your vehicle is most likely to get stolen is while it’s parked on a residential street or driveway. That is, if you even get a chance to buy the car in the first place without it getting stolen, as was the case with a couple of brand-new GMC Hummer EV trucks last month. On an early Tuesday morning in Detroit, it was reported that a group broke into a train yard and tried to drive off with the brand-new Hummers – except it didn’t play out as easily as it looks in the movies.

An Early-Morning Break-In At General Motors
Police responded to the call of a suspected break-in at the General Motors Factory Zero plant train yard around 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The thieves managed to get the rear container doors open and apparently attempted to drive the Hummer EVs straight off the back of the train and onto the tracks. It’s not clear what exactly the get-away plan would have been from there, but it likely involved ramming through another gate or fence had the vehicle stayed together.

Heavyweight Hummers Can’t Jump
Sadly, the Hummers didn’t take the drop onto the tracks particularly well – considering their substantial 9,000-pound-plus curb weight. The heavyweight electric trucks crashed downward, doing significant enough damage that neither could be driven off into the sunset a la Fast & Furious. The first Hummer EV truck in Void Black paintwork made it a little further from the train car with a busted front wheel, shredded front tire, and a banged-up front bumper. The second truck, wearing Meteorite Metallic, was left precariously dangling out of the rear of the container with even more damage, unable to drive.
How Do You Steal A New Hummer?
So far, it’s still unclear if any arrests were made in relation to this event last month, and The Metro Detroit News, with video evidence of the damaged vehicles, reports the incident is still under investigation. It’s not immediately clear either whether General Motors ships its vehicles with keys stored locally nearby or inside, or whether the thieves used other methods to activate the Hummers. Regardless, it’s clear that if you can get to the train, you can get the vehicles started, which is a big problem for GM’s security to sort out now.

Sunk Like A Rock
The GMC Hummer EV Pickup truck has a lot going for it – with up to 1,000 horsepower available on tri-motor models in the Watts To Freedom mode – including as much as 367 miles of range. To pack all of that electric power in, however, means the portly pickup tips the scales at a figure that’s clearly too high to see it gracefully arc off the back of a train. Whether the behemoths were fully charged to enable a Hollywood-style getaway is also unknown.
Depending on configuration, these now-totaled EV trucks are worth an estimated $96,000 to $130,000 each – hardly pocket change – so GM will likely prioritize preventing such future issues.
