The custom restomod fabricator ICON has worked on various so-called Derelict models over the years, where the original car’s patina is found in its deteriorated condition and preserved under a clear coat with the rest of the car updated around that old look using modern materials and components. ICON has made a Derelict Rolls-Royce, old Chevy, Hudson, and Mercury sedans and coupes, VW Buses, Mercedes limousines, and even military trucks. Now, the Derelict series has set its sights on a 1970 Chevrolet C20 pickup, and it’s another instant classic.

Rough Exterior, New Interior
The Derelict Chevy C20 keeps the tattered bodywork, but underneath the preserved looks, the body has been completely gutted for something all-new. The car now rides on a fully-functional modern Chevrolet Silverado pickup chassis offering four-wheel drive.
“Thanks to our incredible team, we were able to maintain full OEM functionality of the Silverado’s CAN bus systems—a massive engineering accomplishment that allows this build to be serviced just like a new truck.”

Icon Builds The Electric Bronco That Ford Won’t
It’s Icon’s first electric off-roader.
A base coat of lime-green paint peeks out from under heavy wear-and-tear surface damage around the vehicle, though it looks like some parts may have been partially restored – the front grille and headlight chrome piece, for example, looks rather pristine compared to the rest of the restomod. It rides on new vintage-style wheels, and features the signature ICON lizard on the hood. It’s not clear what’s under the hood, though, as power specs haven’t been shared yet, and the engine isn’t listed.
The new Silverado is currently available from Chevy with either a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 5.3-liter V8, a 6.2-liter V8, or a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo diesel, each making anywhere from 300 to 420 hp; ICON may give you a choice considering the elevated price point of these custom restomods.
Integrated Technology
The rest of the modern updates beyond the new chassis relate to the interior of the new Derelict C20. There’s a new custom dashboard that seamlessly integrates the modern Silverado’s digital bits while attempting to merge it with a 1970s design aesthetic still. There’s also Conolly leather and plaid wool materials, and ICON promises that most of Chevy’s available optional and aftermarket upgrades are also available on their Derelict truck.

“This unique approach to vehicle design allows drivers to hit the highway or trail in complete stealth, cloaked in heritage but powered by the best of today’s technology. Simply put, it’s a classic look with 21st-century practicality,” continues Ward. “It’s vintage, redefined – American history re-engineered for the future.”
Next up, ICON claims via press release that it is hard at work already on a new 1968 C10 Short Bed restomod, which we can’t wait to get our eyes on.
