Who Needs A Lambo When A Honda Can Fetch Over $1 Million?

  • Fewer than 140 facelifted NSX-Rs were built, making this one an ultra-rare collectible.
  • This example sold for nearly $1.1 million, breaking records at Broad Arrow Auctions.
  • The special edition was lighter than a standard NSX and had an upgraded 3.2-liter V6.

There’s no denying that the Honda NSX is one of Japan’s most iconic performance cars, but over the weekend, one particularly rare model was sold for a sum that might make even die-hard NSX fans do a double take. The price? €934,375, which works out to about $1,064,257. That’s not just a little more than a regular NSX, it’s roughly ten times the price. Yes, you read that right.

So, what’s so special about this NSX-R that could command a price like that? Well, for starters, it’s one of the rarest of the rare. Honda produced fewer than 140 examples of the facelifted NSX-R, and they were sold exclusively in Japan.

To shed any unnecessary weight, Honda went all-in on carbon fiber. The audio system was ditched, and power steering and air conditioning were, for some reason, deemed optional. As if that wasn’t enough, lightweight Recaro carbon-kevlar seats were installed, trimming almost 220 lbs (100 kg) compared to the regular model.

Like all other facelifted NSXs, the R retained the 3.2-liter naturally aspirated V6, but key components were precision-weighted, and the rotating assembly was better balanced. Despite Honda’s assertion that the engine still delivers the same 290 hp as the standard model, the V6 is believed to be more powerful.

Where It Was Sold

Broad Arrow Auctions

The NSX-R was auctioned by Broad Arrow Auctions during the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy last weekend, the same place that BMW revealed its Speedtop concept. No details on its previous owners were provided, but the car had fewer than 16,000 km (9,941 miles) on the clock and had its timing belt replaced in 2023. So, if the new owner plans to actually drive it, they’re good to go for the foreseeable future.

Adorning the exterior is Honda’s beloved Championship White, and it also includes matching BBS wheels. Found in the cabin are those amazing carbon-kevlar seats, trimmed in bright red Alcantara. According to the auction house, bidders from the US, Australia, the UK, South Africa, and Argentina were all competing to get their hands on this special NSX-R, driving up the price.
