Turns Out Stellantis’ New CEO Has Been Quietly Running The Company For Months

  • Antonio Filosa becomes Stellantis’ new CEO, six months after Carlos Tavares’ resignation.
  • Filosa previously served as Jeep CEO and head of Stellantis North and South America.
  • He’s tasked with helping Stellantis recover after a tough year of sinking profits and poor sales.

The search for someone to step into Carlos Tavares’ shoes as the head of Stellantis is finally over. After an exhaustive hunt through both internal and external candidates, the company’s Board of Directors has unanimously decided that Antonio Filosa will take the reins as CEO, starting June 23.

Filosa, born in Naples, Italy, in 1973, is no stranger to the company. With 25 years of experience, his career began with Fiat in 1999, and over the years, he worked his way up to lead Stellantis’ operations across North and South America.

A Steady Climb Through Fiat and Stellantis

Filosa’s journey in the automotive world took a significant turn in 2018 when he was appointed Chief Operating Officer for South America at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). After the 2021 merger with PSA, he retained the role, overseeing Jeep’s expansion into Brazil. His leadership in that area earned him the role of CEO of Jeep, a position he held from November 2023 to February 2025, where he focused on boosting sales and strengthening the brand’s European presence.

During the latest management shakeup after the resignation of Carlos Tavares in December 2024, Filosa was promoted to Chief Operating Officer for the Americans and Chief Quality Officer.

He takes the helm at a tough time for Stellantis, with profits plummeting by 70% in 2024. Reflecting his approach, Filosa made it clear earlier this year that the US retail market is their “main priority” as they work to reverse the company’s troubling slide in global sales.

According to the Board, Filosa’s selection was driven by his “proven track record of hands-on success” over his extensive career, his deep knowledge of the company, and his strong leadership qualities. Executive Chairman John Elkann, who will remain in his role, noted that he had worked closely with Filosa over the past six months and was impressed by his leadership, especially during a time of “unprecedented challenge.”

The Road Ahead

When he will officially assume the role of CEO on June 23, Filosa will announce a new leadership team for Stellantis.

Elkann, who will keep his role as Executive Chairman, said: “I have worked closely with Antonio over the past six months during which time his responsibilities have increased, and his strong and effective leadership spanning both North and South America at a moment of unprecedented challenge have confirmed the excellent qualities he brings to the role.”

In his own statement, Filosa expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, acknowledging the challenges ahead but emphasizing the strength of Stellantis’ people and its legacy. He highlighted the company’s “immense talent, passion, and commitment,” and reiterated that the success of Stellantis will continue to rely on its brands and a customer-focused approach.
