Rivian’s Affordable New SUV Will Have High-End Suspension

Teaser images of the new cost-effective Rivian R2 continue to trickle in courtesy of RJ Scaringe, the Rivian CEO having recently posted images of the compact SUV’s new five-link rear suspension to X/Twitter (embedded at the bottom of this article).

Following similar posts showcasing the validation build R2 – which has since led to speculation about the possible inclusion of LiDAR driver assistance – and its Maxiumus Drive Unit, Scaringe has now shared pictures of the R2’s new rear suspension setup. One he promises will both “deliver incredible ride quality and handling” whilst at the same time adhering to Rivian’s “optimized cost structure” for its latest model.

The all-electric R2 is set to make its debut later this year with an expected MSRP of no more than $45,000.

Focus Is On Ride And Cabin Comfort Without Breaking The Bank

The rear suspension unit features five stamped steel links attached to the forged aluminum rear knuckles (dubbed Starfish, owing to the aquatic shape), meaning Rivian has foregone simpler – and cheaper – alternatives like a torsion beam for its entry-level model in favor of independent rear wheel movement to maximize cabin comfort and offset the weight of the wheels, tires and brakes (details of these have not yet been confirmed). At the other end, the suspension mount is bolted to an isolated rear subframe, a setup that should also limit road noise and vibrations leaking into the cabin.

Rivian Just Proved Why It Pays To Think Ahead

Rivian was already prepared for tariffs in 2024.

This setup is more complex than the inexpensive yet efficient MacPherson double wishbones confirmed for the front of the vehicle. This decision was made largely to keep costs down for a compact SUV that does not require the front-end feedback of a hatchback or performance-focused sedan. Having said that, adaptive dampers have been incorporated at the front, which will adjust electronically according to road conditions, and thus maintain good ride quality and front-end agility.

More Updates Expected In The Coming Weeks

While the more costly multi-link setup does abide by Rivian’s “optimized cost” ruling, it has led to speculation regarding the R2’s potential off-road capabilities. Official renders, for example, show the R2 on light trails, and while the premium, compact e-SUV was never going to be in the same rugged ballpark as the Jeep Wrangler, the Jeep Gladiator or even Honda’s Passport Trailsport, the complexity – and possibly high repair costs – for multi-link suspension has left many wondering how conservative Rivian has been with the “designed for the adventurous” R2.

Why The Rivian R2 Is The Most Important EV Since The Tesla Model Y

Another American EV manufacturer is finally stepping up to challenge Tesla’s dominance, and this time, we think it’s going to win.

Not that this seems to worry Mr Scaringe, who signs off his post with a high-spirited “Can’t wait for folks to get to drive R2 – it’s sooo good!!” Contacts at Rivian have also stated that Scaringe and/or the brand itself will continue posting updates the closer we get to the start of production.
