Will More Power Than A Veyron Convince You This Electric SUV Is A True AMG?

  • Rumors suggest a power output exceeding 1,000 hp for AMG’s electric performance SUV
  • Prototype rides on black wheels wrapped in massive Continental high-performance tires.
  • New model is built on AMG.EA platform featuring advanced 800-volt electric architecture.

While many performance purists may still be skeptical about Mercedes-AMG’s decision to build an electric super sedan and an SUV, development is moving forward, and we now have a fresh look at the SUV thanks to a new batch of spy shots.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]};
adpushup.que.push(function() {
if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){
adpushup.triggerAd(“0f7e3106-c4d6-4db4-8135-c508879a76f8”);
} else {

}
});

Many details are still under wraps, including the name, but these images offer our most revealing look yet. From what’s visible, this SUV appears well-positioned to take on rivals like the Lotus Eletre and the Porsche Cayenne EV, joining the increasingly crowded field of high-performance electric SUVs vying for attention.

The new AMG SUV sits noticeably lower than existing Mercedes crossovers on the market, and is more like a large crossover, similar to the Ferrari Purosangue. Engineers have done a good job of hiding most design details at the front with plenty of camouflage and body cladding. However, we can see the outline of quite a sizeable grille and the basic shape of the headlights.

Looking at this prototype from the side, it’s impossible not to notice the black wheels, orange brake calipers, and the massive Continental tires. Measuring in at 285/40 ZR22 at the front and 325/35 ZR22 at the rear, they’re slightly larger than the 275/40 front and 315/30 rear tires of the Eletre S we recently tested. While there’s no confirmation yet, rumors suggest that power will be upwards of 1,000 hp, which explains the gargantuan size of the tires.

Other details worth noting: flush-mounted door handles and charging ports on both rear quarter panels. Dual ports might seem excessive, but they’ll probably come in handy at over-crowded public chargers or for bidirectional charging setups.

Mercedes-AMG continues to bathe the rear of its prototypes in fake parts to throw off our spy photographers. As such, this car has rudimentary taillights, cheap reflectors, and a bumper that will no doubt be changed significantly for production. With this being said, the shape of the rear window and tailgate does somewhat remind us of the Kia EV6.

Built on a New Platform, With a Clear Mission

Rather than modifying the existing EVA platform used by the EQE SUV and others, AMG is building this performance SUV on its all-new AMG-EA platform. This aluminum-intensive structure is shared with the upcoming AMG electric super sedan and runs an 800-volt electric system, suggesting that rapid charging and thermal efficiency were high on the priorities list. Crucially, it’s been engineered from the ground up with driving dynamics in mind.

}
});

Like AMG’s sedan, this SUV will use next-gen electric motors developed by British engineering firm Yasa. Each motor is capable of producing up to 480 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. AMG plans to offer dual- and tri-motor configurations, with the top-tier model expected to easily exceed 1,000 horsepower. That would make it the most powerful AMG road car yet, beating out even the wildest ICE models the brand has ever made.

The new AMG SUV is expected to make its debut sometime in 2026, arriving in showrooms as a 2027 model.

} else {

}
