Stellantis Turns Its Cheapest SUV Into A Tree House With A View

The optional roof tent available for the Opel Frontera can sleep two adults

Stellantis Turns Its Cheapest SUV Into A Tree House With A View

  • Opel’s affordable SUV now offers a camper-ready roof tent as a unique accessory.
  • The $2,800 rooftop tent sleeps two adults and folds completely flat when not in use.
  • Citroen C3 Aircross may also support this tent upgrade due to shared architecture.

Affordable SUVs rarely promise much more than four wheels and a seat that folds flat. But the Opel Frontera, one of the cheapest SUV models from Stellantis, manages to squeeze in a bit more, especially now that it’s offering a camping-ready roof tent as part of a new accessories range.

Designed with budget-conscious families in mind, the Frontera already brings solid practicality and a roomy cabin to the table, this new add-on just nudges it further into weekend-adventure territory.

The Thule Foothill roof tent is mounted on the optional aluminum roof racks of the Frontera, which can hold up to 240 kg (530 pounds). It can fit two adults, provided they can squeeze into a sleeping area of 2.13 x 1.19 m (83.9 x 46.9 inches). The breathable fabric is weather-resistant, keeping campers dry in the rain, while a large shade protects them from the sun.

Getting in and out of the tent is handled by a retractable ladder that attaches to the vehicle’s side. For airflow and insect control, the windows come fitted with flynets. When the tent’s not in use, it folds neatly into a compact rectangular box that rises just 240 mm (9.5 inches) above the rack.

Camping Without the Camping Van

Interestingly, Opel didn’t showcase the roof tent on the higher-end Frontera GS trim. Instead, the entry-level Edition variant was chosen, sporting basic white steel wheels and a contrasting two-tone exterior that oddly works for a weekend escape aesthetic.

Opel suggests that what makes Frontera suitable for camping is its solid mix of space and storage. The SUV stretches 4,385 mm (172.6 inches) in length and offers cargo capacity between 460 and 1,600 liters (16.2 to 56.5 cubic feet), depending on how the seats are arranged. Interior storage solutions add to the practicality.

Mild-Hybrid Muscle (Sort Of)

The setup is compatible across the entire Frontera lineup, including the mild-hybrid and fully electric versions. The example featured in photos reveals its powertrain through visible cooling intakes and an exhaust pipe, confirming the presence of the mild-hybrid 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. On its own, the engine delivers 99 hp (74 kW / 100 PS), supplemented by an additional 28 hp (21 kW / 28 PS) from an electric motor integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Since the Frontera shares its central structure and roof design with the Citroen C3 Aircross, there’s a strong chance the same roof tent could fit that SUV as well. For those needing more space (and willing to pay for it), Opel and Citroën offer larger options like the Grandland and C5 Aircross. Just don’t expect them to come cheap.

If you’re browsing beyond Stellantis, the closest rivals to the Opel Frontera are the Dacia Jogger crossover and Duster SUV, both available with an optional Sleep Pack and other camper accessories.

As for pricing, the roof tent is already listed on Opel’s official accessory page, priced at €2,447 ($2,800). However, buyers will also need the aluminum roof racks that retail for €298 ($336). As for the Opel Frontera, the cheapest hybrid trim is priced from €23,900 ($27,000) in Germany.
