Used, Worn-Out Car Parts Are So Much Cooler When They’re From Ferrari F1 Cars

As unattainable as most Ferraris are for most people, including ourselves, Ferrari’s race cars are even more so. Either you have to be good enough to race for Ferrari, in which case you only have the car for racing, or you have to be able to buy a retired car at auction. That latter option is, naturally, exceedingly expensive, and yet still a more plausible route to Ferrari race car ownership than landing a slot with the racing team. Now, though, Ferrari is letting people get pieces of its race cars. They’re not just unused leftovers, either. They’re pieces of actually raced vehicles. They’re still expensive, but they’re the closest most people will ever get to having the whole thing. Just don’t plan on building a car a piece at a time like in the Johnny Cash song.

What Parts Are Available

You can find the various Ferrari parts at its web store, to which we’ve linked. Every part featured comes from a former Formula 1 race car, and most of them are engine parts. There are various pistons, connecting rods, valves, and even camshafts. There are other parts available, too, namely brake discs. All of them are presented on some kind of display made of carbon fiber, aluminum, or acrylic, depending on the individual item. They’re understated and pleasing to look at. And since the engine parts are all used, you can see the discoloration from high temperatures and contact with oil. It helps emphasize the racing history of the parts.

Additionally, Ferrari has kept track of which cars and which drivers were associated with the parts, and the parts range spans multiple eras. There are parts from cars driven by Schumacher and Barrichello, to more recent drivers such as Vettel and Leclerc. So, if you have a favorite engine, car, or driver, Ferrari may have just the piece for you. The inventory does change over time, so if one isn’t there yet, it might be.

What They Cost

Naturally, these pieces are expensive, but not necessarily as otherworldly as some Ferrari memorabilia. At the time of writing, the cheapest part you can get is a valve from an F2005 race car. It’s listed for $924, which isn’t nothing, but to put that into perspective, Ferrari sells sweater jackets that cost as much or more, and that’s just branded merchandise. There are even watches that cost multiples of not just a race car part, but Ferrari’s own road cars. This valve was used, not just in any Ferrari F1 car, but one of the much-loved V10-powered F1 cars in the Schumacher era. That seems like a pretty solid deal. Now, if you have more money to burn, there are far more expensive items. The most expensive item available at the time of writing is a camshaft from Schumacher’s very own F2005. That runs $12,144. It’s a far larger piece, and arguably more interesting to look at, plus it has Schumacher provenance. With that said, we would probably be more than happy with that valve we mentioned. Also, even if you can’t afford some of these parts, it’s worth browsing the options just to get a neat peek at what goes into F1 cars.
