Tesla Now Offers Official Trade-in On Cybertruck; Estimates Are Not Good

Tesla has now begun offering trade-ins on its polarizing Cybertruck. Owners looking to make a killing on the all-electric pseudo-pickup truck that Elon Musk once referred to as an “appreciating asset,” however, may be left disappointed, as resale values have seemingly gone through the floor.

Posting recently on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum, an owner of a 2024 Cybertruck All-Wheel Drive Foundation Series – which had a sticker price starting at $99,990 when brand-new – with only 6,211 miles on the clock was offered a trade-in estimate of just $65,400 through the official Tesla website, a drop of just over 35 percent. Another 2024 Cybertruck owner, meanwhile – also an AWD Foundation, but with more than 32,000 miles on the odometer – was given a similarly bleak 60,500 official estimate for trade-in, a drop of 39 percent. And bear in mind, these estimates are around $3-$4K more than being offered by online-only used-car retailer Carvana.

Could Tesla Pause Cybertruck Production?

This is another potential black-eye for Tesla’s controversial Cybertruck. Having at one point unseated the Ford F-150 Lightning as the best-selling electric truck in the United States (the Blue Ovals has since retaken that spot at the top of the mountain), Tesla could be on the verge of pausing production of the Cybertruck altogether, as thousands of unsold 2024MY and 2025MY models – potentially in excess of 10,000 units – are reportedly sitting idle. That’s a potential $800 million of unsold stock for a vehicle whose reservation list, at one point, surpassed 1.9 million names (the at-one-time five-year wait time has also plummeted to just a few weeks). Complaints that the steel trim was “peeling off” at speed, leading to a full recall in March, certainly haven’t helped either.

It’s Been A Rough Start To 2025 For Tesla

Tesla’s Q1 2025 financial results have also made for grave reading, as the Texas-based company reported a 13 percent drop over the same period in 2024, its worst quarter since 2022. A large portion of this is down to boycotts of, and negative sentiments towards, the brand owing to CEO Musk’s controversial involvement with DOGE, though the company itself highlighted “uncertainty in the automotive and energy markets” as a more pressing concern.

On top of that, Tesla has also – finally – confirmed that the Range Extender battery pack, first launched in 2023, is no longer for sale. Even this puts the lid on a PR nightmare for Tesla, as the Range Extender added ‘only’ 130 miles of range – well short of the 500-mile total that was first suggested – and would cost a hefty $16,000 when it went on sale.

Tesla Offering Massive Incentives On Cybertrucks To Move Old Inventory

Tesla is offering more than just a discount, with some offers of free FSD tech and Supercharger access if you buy a 2024 Cybertruck.

Despite this, Tesla is still planning to launch new models later this year, including refreshed versions of the Model Y, the Model S, and the Model X, as well as a “low cost” entry-level EV. Given the circumstances, though, it’s likely the launch of a new rear-wheel drive Cybertruck could face delays.
