It’s been 18 long years since the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione was first shown to the world, and, according to many pundits, it remains one of the most beautiful cars ever conceived. Zagato is perhaps the only company that can make an 8C look even better, and it’s gearing up to launch a special 8C-based one-off at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy this weekend.

The Alfa Romeo 8C Doppiacoda Zagato recently appeared on the entry list for the event hosted by the BMW Group, though Zagato hasn’t confirmed its existence. The design house has also yet to release any teasers or photos of the car. While many speculated that a tagged photo on Zagato’s Instagram was a leaked image, it’s pretty clear that it’s an AI-generated creation. That said, we’re skeptical it’s actually connected to Zagato, but we’ll have to wait and see.

In Italian, “Doppiacoda” means double-tail or twin tail, sparking speculation that this car might take a page from Zagato’s Alpine A110-based AGTZ Twin Tail. That model featured a removable long tail section at the rear, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Zagato took the same creative liberties here.

What makes this project even more interesting is that the 8C Doppiacoda Zagato has been entered into the Concept Cars & Prototypes category at Villa d’Este. This suggests it’s a one-off, bespoke design rather than a limited-edition production car like the AGTZ Twin Tail. Whether the owner of a regular 8C commissioned this special creation or Zagato simply decided to take on the project themselves and sell it after remains to be seen.
