China’s Answer To The Cybertruck Going Into Production

  • The new model will be available in China, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and other markets.
  • GAC’s pickup stucy features front and rear LEDs and cameras in place of wing mirrors.
  • Significant changes are expected to be made to the Pickup 01 Concept’s interior.

The Tesla Cybertruck may still hold the title of the most unconventional pickup on the market, but China’s GAC is ready to roll out a new contender that believes it could give the Cybertruck a serious run for its money, both literally and figuratively. Known as the Pickup 01, it was recently unveiled as a concept at the Shanghai Auto Show, and now the Chinese automaker has confirmed that not only will it go into production, but it will also be sold globally.

Scheduled for a 2027 production launch, GAC has made it clear that the Pickup 01 won’t be limited to the Chinese market. As reported by Autohome, the company confirmed that it will make its way to Australia, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Mexico and other countries where GAC is present. The state-owned company, which has joint ventures with Toyota and Honda, has yet to announce specifics about the powertrain that will be used in the pickup.

The concept, which looks like a mashup of the Tesla Cybertruck and the new GMC Hummer EV, features a boxy, angular design that makes it stand out among the sea of other Chinese pickups. While it’s still unclear how closely the production model will adhere to this design, considering Xpeng’s wild six-wheeled, aircraft-carrying AeroHT, we wouldn’t bet against GAC pulling it off.

If the production model stays true to the concept, it will focus heavily on off-road performance, with plenty of ground clearance, exposed tow hooks, and distinctive wheels. As expected from any serious off-roader, the concept also featured two LED light bars above the windshield and replaced traditional wing mirrors with small cameras.

Significant changes can be expected for the Pickup 01’s interior. The concept’s over-the-top cabin featured a steering wheel mounted on a custom dashboard slider, allowing it to shift from the right to the left side of the cabin. While this would make it simple to offer both left- and right-hand drive versions, there’s no chance such a setup would meet safety standards.

Some elements of the concept’s cabin that could make it to production include the widescreen infotainment system and the minimalist design details.
