Polestar Recalls Second Model This Week For Camera Problems

Five days after electric car company Polestar issued a recall for its Polestar 2 sedan, the Swedish company is issuing a very similar recall for one of its other models. The Polestar 3 is up this time, with the company notifying 3,664 customers that their 2025 Polestar 3 will need a software fix for the rear camera.

The problem, the automaker says, is that the rearview camera image might not come up when the vehicle is put in reverse. A rearview camera showing you your rear view when your moving rearward is the most important feature of the camera, so this was a problem. It also falls foul of federal regulations, specifically FMVSS 111.

The Camera Can Stick On 360 View

Crucially, though, this isn’t a case of the car refusing to turn the camera on; it’s more an issue with what exactly the camera is showing the driver. The problem arises if you haven’t exceeded 10 mph since the last time you put the car into reverse. If you haven’t, then it will default to the car’s 360 view. Obviously, a 360-view should still show you behind (and around) the car, but that’s not what it is supposed to do (by law), so it needs a fix. The NHTSA points out, both obviously and correctly, that “a rearview camera image that does not display reduces the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.”

It’s an easy fix. A new software update will make the camera go to the rearview image every time you put it in reverse.

Polestar’s Sales Surge In 2025

Much credit goes to the Polestar 3.

The timeline behind this one is quick. The NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) reached out on February 10th after three reports of the camera not displaying. On March 25, Polestar met with NHTSA officials, and on May 5, they met again to announce the recall.

Different Issue From Polestar 2

This is not the same issue as the camera-related recall on the Polestar 2 earlier this week. In that case, the camera image could fail to display completely. It would instead read “camera is temporarily unavailable.” That issue took four years to get to a recall.

That these issues are unrelated is probably a good sign for anyone considering a Polestar 4. That model has no rear window at all, meaning that if the camera doesn’t work, you can’t see behind you. Like driving a U-Haul. Two different issues make it a safe bet that there isn’t a more pervasive camera issue that may affect the Polestar 4 down the road.

There are still new ones available, but you can forget about 2026 models.

As with all recalls, owners will get a letter from Polestar in the mail to notify them of the problem. Letters are set to go in the mail on July 1. Owners can contact Polestar customer service quoting recall RP1057. If any owners have been charged for fixing this issue, they can apply for reimbursement.
