One Of The Greatest Muscle Cars Ever Just Sold Cheap Thanks To A Dirty Cop

  • Plymouth Superbird sold for $175,000 at auction after being seized from a corrupt official
  • It just so happens to be one of the cars seized from disgraced former sheriff Jamey Noel.
  • Proceeds from the classic muscle car sale will go to Clark County and the state of Indiana.

One of the most recognizable muscle cars ever made just sold for $175,000 at auction, and that’s honestly a bit of a steal. Of course, that lowish price might have something to do with a different type of theft. This is one of the many cars former Sheriff Jamey Noel bought with state funds. During the investigation into Noel, authorities seized this car and might have been able to get more for it.

adpushup.que.push(function() {
if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){
adpushup.triggerAd(“0f7e3106-c4d6-4db4-8135-c508879a76f8”);
} else {

}
});

Noel was sentenced to 15 years in prison late last year after pleading guilty to 27 counts of misusing funds earmarked for the fire department and EMS. Investigators uncovered a spending spree that included everything from luxury vacations to airplanes to wardrobes, and, notably, a rather impressive car collection.

He reportedly acquired two 1970s Plymouth Superbirds alone, which certainly raises questions about how closely anyone was watching the books.

The 1977 Superbird that just sold at auction is powered by a 440 Super Commando V8 with a six-barrel carburetor. It’s factory rated to make 390 horsepower (290 kW) and 490 lb-ft (663 Nm) of torque. It sends all of that power to the rear wheels via an automatic gearbox. This is essentially one of the most sought-after packages from that time period. According to the seller, it’s also a numbers-matching car, and it only has 42,109 miles on it.

By all accounts, this kind of rare car should’ve gone for more money. Publicly available data from Bring A Trailer indicates that of the last nine Superbirds to sell there, only one fell short of $200,000. That one sold for $172,000 and had 82,000 miles on it, almost double that of the one that just sold in Indiana. Ultimately, it appears that someone got a great deal on a very desirable car.

By most measures, a car this rare and well-preserved should have commanded a higher price. Public sales data from Bring A Trailer shows that among the last nine Superbirds auctioned on the platform, only one sold for less than $200,000. That example went for $172,000 and had 82,000 miles, nearly twice the mileage of the Indiana car.

All things considered, someone walked away with a solid deal on a car that’s only getting more collectible.

Whatever your thoughts on Noel’s spending habits, this Superbird is still a standout piece of muscle car history. It’s just that its road to the auction block was far from typical. Noel, for his part, is now required to repay over $3.1 million in public funds on top of serving his sentence. The car’s new owner, meanwhile, probably got a little more than they bargained for, a slice of automotive history with a side of scandal.
