Volvo Car USA is recalling more than 400,000 vehicles across most of its recent model lineup due to an issue where the rearview camera feed may fail to appear when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this defect increases the risk of a crash and fails to comply with federal safety standards for rear visibility.
The recall, assigned NHTSA campaign number 25V282000, potentially affects 413,151 Volvo vehicles in the United States, and has hit everything from the S90 to the XC90.

The problem lies in software that could prevent the center screen from displaying the mandatory rearview camera image when in reverse. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111 requires this image to display automatically to reduce the risk of backover incidents. A blank screen significantly reduces the driver’s view behind the vehicle, hence the recall action.
Wide-Ranging Impact Across the Lineup
This software issue affects a broad range of Volvo’s passenger cars and sport utility vehicles sold over the past several years. Owners of the following vehicles should anticipate receiving a recall notice or checking for the available software update:
The extensive list covers nearly every major model line Volvo has offered in the U.S. recently, spanning compact crossovers, midsize wagons, sedans, and SUVs, which indicates that it’s less likely a hardware or assembly fault, and it isn’t.

Fortunately for owners, the fix is straightforward. Volvo will update the vehicle software free of charge. This update can be performed by authorized Volvo dealers or, for many owners, through an over-the-air software update without needing a dealership visit. Volvo expects to mail official owner notification letters regarding the recall starting June 24, 2025. Volvo Car’s internal number for this recall is R10320.
Polestar Recall And Broader Challenges
This massive Volvo recall follows closely on the heels of a similar action taken just last week by Polestar, the electric vehicle maker that was spun off of Volvo. The automaker recalled over 27,000 Polestar 2 vehicles in the U.S. for the same rearview camera display issue. The Polestar 2 shares platform architecture and technology with some Volvo models, particularly the electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, making related software glitches unsurprising.
The timing of this recall also coincides with other adjustments in Volvo’s U.S. operations. Reuters noted on Wednesday that Volvo plans to reduce the workforce by five percent at its Charleston, South Carolina, manufacturing plant. Last month, the company also announced a restructuring of its American operations and withdrew its previous earnings forecast, citing negative impacts from recently imposed tariffs on imported vehicles.
