Genesis Is Delivering Its First Hybrid EREV For Christmas… Next Year

The current Genesis GV70 is a well-rounded, good-looking, sharp-handling machine offered in both combustion and fully-electric versions, a move which the luxury brand was one of the first to pull off with multiple models in its lineup. As the automaker continues down a path toward full electrification in the future, it has already admitted that it will be necessary to supplement its current gas options with hybrid models in the near-term. Now, we have a better idea of what those hybrids will look like, and when the first one will go into production.

It Takes Time To Launch Models, So This Will Make A Great Christmas Present Next Year

Now, it’s been reported that Genesis is targeting a December 2026 launch of its first hybrid, which will be an extended-range electric vehicle based on the current GV70 SUV. An EREV is a hybrid system where a gas engine, which isn’t connected to any axles, generates energy to charge a battery pack, which then powers electric motors to move the wheels. The engine isn’t always running.

This new vehicle is set to arrive in 2026.

Reports of these plans go back to June of last year, but now we know it’ll be a lovely Christmas present. It’s unclear if that date is for the U.S. market or if the next-gen tech will launch in the more localized Korean market first. The current gas GV70 features either a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine good for 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, or a 3.5-liter twin-turbo unit making 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. The current electric offering, the GV70 Electrified, makes 429 hp and 516 lb-ft (with an upgraded 84 kWh battery good for 236 miles of range on a full charge). All models currently come with all-wheel drive.

Tariff Trouble Lies Ahead

Genesis will also need to figure out where its new models fit against the new tariff policy from the U.S. White House that puts a 25% tariff on imported cars. Currently, shoppers only have less than two months left to secure a new Genesis at current prices, and it’s unclear what the automaker has planned when that promise expires this summer.

It will have to raise prices in the short term and find new parts sourcing and production solutions in the long term, if the tariffs (or the threat thereof) stick around. It’s also very unlikely you’re going to find any dealer or OEM incentives for the tariff period, as well. Cars made in North America may get some exemptions, but Genesis will still be importing many parts from other regions.

Used G70s are a performance bargain, but the used S4 can pay you back over time. What matters most to you?

As of April of this year, it was still unclear exactly which powertrain Genesis would deploy for its first EREV GV70 models, though it’s guaranteed to be capable of rear- and all-wheel drive configurations. The Hyundai Group of automakers has recently previewed EREV tech featuring a 2.5-liter gas unit, but it’s unclear if that’s intended for use by Genesis or just Kia and Hyundai. It would make the most sense with such a quick turnaround to production by December of next year.
