It’s A Good Thing The Polestar 2 Still Has A Rear Window

More than 27,000 Polestar 2 SUVs are being recalled in the United States owing to a significant issue with their rearview cameras. Simply put, they’re not working. Up to 27,816 examples of Polestar’s smallest model, specifically 2021-2025 examples built between July 2020 and November 2024, are being recalled for what the Geely-owned, premium sister brand to Volvo refers to as a “synchronization error” between the software for both the all-electric fastback’s infotainment screen and that of the rear Parking Assist Camera (PAC).

Though not officially stated, this issue likely affects the 299-horsepower Long range Single motor, the 421-horsepower Long range Dual motor, and the top-tier, 476-hp Long range Dual motor with Performance pack Polestar 2 models.

What The Problem Actually Is, And How Polestar Will Remedy It

Rather than showing the driver a rearview image from the PAC when the vehicle is put into reverse, in some instances, the infotainment screen simply states a ‘Camera is temporarily unavailable’ message. In a glorious piece of understatement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) claims that the camera defect could “reduce the driver’s visibility” whilst reversing and thus increase the risk of a shunt. Owners of all affected vehicles should be notified no later than 19 June.

The first customer complaint was first received in March 2021, which eventually led to a deep dive by Polestar and, later, a voluntary recall in June 2024. To remedy the issue, Volvo will upgrade all recalled models of the Polestar 2 with new software, development of which began last July.

Polestar 2 Will No Longer Be Imported Into The U.S. Due To Tariffs

This recall comes at a particularly awkward time for Polestar. The Swedish, all-electric brand is one of several European manufacturers hit hard by the Trump administration’s 25-percent tariffs on all non-US-produced vehicles and auto parts imported into the U.S. Polestar, for instance, produces just one of its vehicles – the $67,500 to $79,400 Polestar 3 – out of the Geely Group’s facility in South Carolina, and had planned to import its upcoming Polestar 4 sedan (which has no rear window, by the way) from its parent company’s Busan plant in South Korea. The Polestar 2, meanwhile, is built out of Volvo’s Taizhou facility, and is not currently being imported to the United States. Aston Martin likewise recently stated that it would be limiting its U.S. imports owing to both additional costs caused by the tariffs and “political and macroeconomic volatility” in the United States.

Alongside this, Polestar has also requested additional time to file its financial report for Q1 in 2025, with the Swedish brand officially requesting an extension to “before or on May 14.” Though not exactly a huge confidence-booster, Polestar did explain in an official statement that “good momentum in transforming commercial operations,” as well as increased production for both the Polestar 3 and 4, would see profit margins improve during 2025. Polestar is also targeting an annual sales growth of between 30 and 35 percent by 2027.
