Toyota’s Hydrogen Trucks Are Coming For Diesel And They Are Not Slowing Down

  • Toyota will deploy hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks to support its parts center.
  • A new hydrogen fueling station will be built with Air Liquide and Iwatani in California.
  • The Gen 3 hydrogen powertrain promises 2x durability and improved fuel efficiency by 1.2x.

Hydrogen fuel cell-powered cars have not taken off the way Toyota would have liked, but that doesn’t mean the automotive juggernaut doesn’t see a future in the technology. This week, Toyota has announced plans to introduce hydrogen fuel cell Class 8 heavy-duty trucks in California to support its large parts center in the state.

These trucks have been tested through a pilot program and soon will start to operate on routes from the Port of Long Beach to the NAPCC in Ontario, California, and down to San Diego. To support this new fleet of environmentally-conscious trucks, Toyota will also construct a new hydrogen fueling station at their parts center campus.

The new station is being built in partnership with Air Liquide and Iwatani. It promises to provide faster fueling than conventional hydrogen fueling stations, matching the speed of high-flow diesel pumps.

While speaking at the 2025 Advanced Clean Transportation Expo, Toyota Group vice president of Powertrain Engineering Jordan Choby, said the new fuel-cell powered trucks will replace several diesel-powered vehicles already used to support the North America Parts Center in California.

“Hydrogen as a fuel – and especially fuel cells – offer benefits that can make a positive change, and we are invested in their long-term success,” Choby said. “We are investing in resources that we believe will lead to sustainable growth, both for our operations and the entire value chain in this still-evolving transportation sector.”

 Toyota’s Hydrogen Trucks Are Coming For Diesel And They Are Not Slowing Down

Not only is Toyota working to deploy a fleet of hydrogen heavy-duty trucks, but it’s also found the time and resources to make its hydrogen powertrains even better. Earlier this year, Toyota announced it had created a Gen 3 version of its heavy-duty truck powertrain. It promises 2x better durability, a 1.2x improvement in fuel efficiency, and significant cost reductions. This new powertrain can also go without a major service for 600,000 miles or 1 million km.

Looking Ahead to 2027

According to Toyota, the new powertrain will be ready for the U.S. market in 2027 or later. It will form a key part of Toyota’s larger plan to decarbonize its supply chain and further integrate hydrogen into its logistics operations.

});

While passenger car buyers might not be lining up for fuel cell vehicles just yet, Toyota seems confident that in the world of heavy-duty transport, hydrogen’s time is coming.
