A class action lawsuit has been filed against Nissan in California over concerns that the door locks on select models of the Altima, the Rogue, and the Sentra could fail, potentially leading to the doors opening whilst the vehicle is on the move.
Nissan
Nissan Motor Corporation is a Japanese automaker founded in 1933 and the parent automaker of Infiniti and formerly Datsun. Nissan produces a wide variety of mass-market vehicles, including popular SUVs like the Rogue, sedans like the Sentra, and trucks like the Nissan Frontier, but is also responsible for iconic sports cars like the Nissan Z and GT-R. Since 1999, Nissan has been part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance (the name changed when Mitsubishi joined in 2016).

The lawsuit has been filed by Deena Khalifa, who purchased a 2020MY Nissan Rogue SUV in March of that year, and targets the fifth and sixth generation Altima (models built between 2013 and 2025), the second and third gen Rogue SUV (2014-2025), and the seventh and eighth generation Sentra sedan (2013 to 2025).
Lock Actuator Failure Complaints; Doors Opening And Closing Involuntarily
The lawsuit claims that a defect in each Nissan’s door lock actuators, and the components therein, can cause the locks to fail altogether. This poses a significant risk to occupants and owners, as the doors could potentially open whilst on the move, unlock automatically, or refuse to open altogether.

A class action lawsuit is taking Ford to task, claiming that the vehicles are now “devalued.”
The door actuator is a known issue to Nissan, which recalled 6,595 vehicles in 2015 – specifically the Sentra, the Versa Note and the Rogue – when the Japanese marque began receiving complaints. In one instance, a customer was alarmed when her 2018 Rogue refused to open as she was attempting to avoid “a strange acting man.” The door lock actuator is believed to have failed. Alarmingly, another Nissan owner stated that all four locks on her 2019 Rogue failed whilst her 5-month-old child was in the car, forcing her to break one of the side windows.
New Rogue Owner Claims “Unjust Enrichment From Nissan
Bizarrely, the plaintiff in this class action case, Ms. Khalifa, has claimed not to have been personally affected by this door lock actuator issue. She does, however, state that had she been informed of the potential issue by her Nissan dealership in California, she would not have made her Rogue SUV purchase in 2020.

In the world of high-end cars, sometimes it’s brands that are unhappy with their customers and not the other way round.
Ms. Khalifa is claiming that Nissan has violated California’s Consumers Legal Remedies Act, acting solely on the grounds of “unjust enrichment,” and is looking to settle the matter in front of a jury. Her lawsuit claims that Nissan knew all about the issues, and instead of enacting a remedy, chose to actively conceal the issue. Whether or not that’s true will be determined in court.
