There’s a castle in Germany with a rather large 17-mile racecourse mapped out around it, and it’s where automakers have been sending development vehicles to test for decades. It’s become legendary for companies setting competing times in hot cars, plus some very famous races have taken place there, with automakers happy to claim victory over the challenging so-called “Green Hell” track. Now, BMW is celebrating the strip of road with a special BMW M4 coupe in Shanghai.
BMW is celebrating those Nurburgring
lap times with a special model for China only, limited to just 53 units of production to also celebrate 53 years of the BMW M performance tuning division’s existence. BMW has more than 25 years of history with the Nürburgring to cherish, which it calls the world’s most famous racetrack.
The Looks Are A Mix Of M4 Competition And M4 CS
The special 53 cars will come in BMW Individual Frozen Deep Green metallic paint finish, with a red-framed grille on the nose and bronze wheels, all of which echo the more powerful and more focused M4 CS (though Bimmer fanatics will argue that the CS was finished in Frozen Isle of Man Green metallic). Back to this China-only special, there’s also a red ‘Ring logo embroidered on the interior headrests. There’s a numbered door card on the sills as you enter the car, as well, so you know you’re special.

It’s only building 50, but BMW still has to make sure Skytop doesn’t crumble on track.
All examples will be based on the latest BMW M4 Competition with xDrive, generating up to 523 hp from its turbocharged inline-six engine. BMW claims it can get from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds, but for a special edition named after one of the most gruelling tracks on the planet, one can’t help but wonder if this variant ought to have had some specific performance upgrades, even if only to the suspension.
Why The Special Edition Deserves To Exist
According to FastestLaps.com, the BMW M4 is quicker around the famed ‘Ring than hot cars like the Jaguar F-Type R, the old BMW M2 Competition coupe, and the old Porsche Panamera Turbo S, setting a time of around 7 minutes and 52 seconds. The M4 Competition with xDrive managed the same track in 7:28.57, and the M4 GTS, based on the previous-gen F82 platform, goes around almost a second quicker than that.

BMW has raised the price of its 2 Series coupes, including the M2, and it could be just the beginning.
Perhaps someday, we may see a Nürburgring version of the M2, as that car has been battling the Audi RS3 on the Nordschleife. Until then, we can look forward to the G87 M2 CS, which will be even quicker to 62 mph than an M4 CS.
