You’re Planning A Heist, What’s The Best Getaway Car?

Speed isn’t the only consideration when picking a vehicle to get you and your loot away from trouble

You’re Planning A Heist, What’s The Best Getaway Car?

  • Police were recently searching for a man who used a Rolls-Royce Cullinan in bank robberies.
  • The man rented the expensive luxury SUV for $1,750 a day in order to carry out the heists.
  • A getaway car needs speed, torque, and stealth, but the Rolls is anything but inconspicuous .

Police in Michigan made headlines for hunting down a man who rented a Rolls-Royce Cullinan and allegedly used it to help pull off multiple bank robberies earlier this year. Beyond the insanity of renting a getaway car, what struck us was the choice of vehicle.

We’re not sure what’s more mind-boggling: renting a car for your getaway (which, you know, kind of makes it easy for the cops to trace you), or the actual car itself. While some thieves have probably splurged on a Roller after scoring big on a job, this is the first time we’ve heard of someone driving to a heist in one.

The Ideal Getaway Car

This got us thinking about what the ideal escape car might be, and wondering what you might pick if you were setting up your own score. Is a supercar the obvious choice?

Speed would be a valuable asset, true. You’d want something with strong acceleration, probably a sub-5-second 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time and at least a 170 mph (274 km/h) top end in case you had to shake a tail. Plenty of torque would be more desirable than top-end kick, and that performance should be manageable. Something with all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission.

On the other hand, maybe you’d happily trade some performance for anonymity because becoming invisible to cops is arguably a better plan than hoping to outrun their cruisers and helicopters. That could mean choosing something stealthy, like an older car.

But maybe in a few years crooks will be able to take advantage of the shape-shifting and color-changing tech BMW has shown us on its concept cars. That would really throw the cops off the scent. And if we’re talking about not attracting attention, then you should at least consider an EV.

Depending on the size of your crew and your haul, you might decide you’re better off in a fast sedan, wagon or SUV rather than a sports car like a Porsche 911 Turbo. British robbers in the 1990s were quite partial to the Vauxhall Lotus Carlton and these days they seem to like its modern equivalent, the Audi RS6. It’s easy to see why: with up to 621 hp (630 PS), rock-solid stability from its Quattro all-wheel drive system, room for four big guys and all their swag, it ticks plenty of boxes.

The Bottom Line: What Would You Drive?

As does the twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, it turns out. But we’re still not convinced a giant white SUV with an orange interior and a grille like the Lincoln Memorial would get our vote over something smaller, nimbler and far more discrete like a VW Golf R. What would you choose for your heist and why?
