Ford Freezes US Exports Of Vehicles To China Amid Tariff War Fallout

  • Ford has halted exports of certain models to China, including the F-150 pickup.
  • This stoppage is the first action Ford has taken in response to the rising tariffs.
  • Exports of American-made engines and transmissions to China will continue.

Ford has announced that it has suspended shipments of cars and trucks to China, as the company grapples with retaliatory tariffs imposed on American-made vehicles. The stoppage will impact a host of models, including the Ford F-150 Raptor, Bronco and Mustang, as well as the Lincoln Navigator.

It’s the latest result of the ongoing trade war between the US and China, which has automakers on both sides caught in the crossfire. China raised tariffs on US-made vehicles to as high as 150 percent in response to the Trump Administration’s levies on a wide range of Chinese goods.

Last year, Ford sold around 400,000 vehicles in China, but in 2024, only 5,500 of those were imported from the US. It’s a small but profitable segment of Ford’s presence in the country, reports The Wall Street Journal. Despite accounting for a minor percentage of Chinese sales, Ford offered its most well-known nameplates as a brand-building exercise, with trucks like the imported F-150 Raptor selling for over $100,000 in the Chinese market.

Despite the stoppage on the export of assembled cars, the company will continue to send US-built engines and transmissions to China. One vehicle the Blue Oval imports from China is the Lincoln Nautilus. Despite being subject to heavy tariffs, shipments continue.

Meanwhile, back home, Ford plans to raise prices on new vehicles if the tariff war continues, according to an internal memo. This comes despite roughly 80 percent of its models sold in the US being built domestically. While this might help them avoid the blanket 25% tariffs on imported cars, it doesn’t shield them from tariffs on parts manufactured overseas and used in their vehicles.

An analysis by the Center for Automotive Research, published earlier this month, stated that Trump’s 25% tariffs on automotive imports will increase costs for automakers by approximately $108 billion in 2025. The on-off tariffs have left automakers scrambling to reassess their position, but President Trump indicated earlier this week that he may consider some exemptions to the new levies.
