Mustang Sales Collapsed Yet It Still Somehow Topped The Global Charts

  • The Ford Mustang was the best-selling sports car globally and in America last year.
  • Despite retaining the titles, Mustang sales were down 9.5% in the U.S. in 2024.
  • The pony car is sold in 85 countries and starts at $31,920 in the United States.

Ford has a shiny new Mustang, but buyers couldn’t care less. Sales fell 9.5% last year to 44,003 units and 2025 is shaping up to be even worse.

Through the first three months of the year, pony car sales were off 31.6% as dealers only sold 9,377 units. That dreadful result came despite having a near monopoly on the segment as the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger are dead.

That isn’t stopping Ford from trying to put a positive spin on things as the Mustang was once again America’s best-selling sports car as well as the best-selling sports car globally. Of course, that’s not really surprising as the model is relatively affordable and available in 85 markets.

Given disappointing sales of the seventh-generation Mustang, it’s not surprising that Ford didn’t say how many cars were sold globally last year. However, the company said that in the past decade, customers have snapped up nearly one million units.

Digging into the numbers, U.S. sales have plummeted from 122,349 units in 2015 to 44,003 last year. In fact, the car posted seven years of consecutive declines, before experiencing a slight jump in 2023.

It’s hard saying why the latest pony car hasn’t found much success, but the 2025 Mustang starts at $31,920 before a $1,595 destination fee. It features classic muscle car looks as well as a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that produces 315 hp (235 kW / 319 PS) and 350 lb-ft (474 Nm) of torque.

While the standard model comes exclusively with a ten-speed automatic transmission, a six-speed manual is available on the $46,560 Mustang GT. However, it’s more notable for featuring a 5.0-liter V8 developing 480 hp (358 kW / 487 PS) and 418 lb-ft (566 Nm) of torque.
