Ever hop in a Palisade and think “this thing needs more headroom. A LOT more headroom.” Well, we have, and we’re clearly not the only ones. At the Soul Mobility Show – where CarBuzz was in attendance to see the unveiling of two potentially production-bound Genesis concepts – the Korean automaker introduced what’s called the Palisade Highroof. Think of it like a US-style conversion van, but built on the three-row Hyundai SUV.
No, we still don’t have the new Palisade on sale here, but that’s not going to slow Hyundai down at home. Hyundai and Kia have done this before with minivans, but it might be the first time on an SUV.
Palisade With A Whole Lot More Altitude
The new roof is 9.3 inches higher than a standard next-gen Palisade, making it a parking garage-challenged 78.8 inches tall. The rest of the dimensions are the same, though the 20-inch wheels are unique to this model.
YouTube Channel MotorWeekend Worldwide was one of several Korean outlets to capture the new model, and give us a better look at what must be a more family-friendly version of this big SUV.
We can’t see inside, at least not very well. Hyundai did not open the vehicle up to the public. That’s common for pre-production and prototype wheels, if a bit frustrating.

The Honda Pilot will be up all night too.
Some cool details are visible, though, including what looks to be a 27-inch or so TV with streaming video service. The numbers might not be the highest, but because this is a normal ratio TV, not an ultra-widescreen, it might be the largest TV offered in a vehicle right now. It also doesn’t seem to completely block the driver’s view, which the BMW 7’s TV is exceptional at doing.
More Comfort For More Passengers With More Roof
While it’s tough to confirm, this SUV also appears to have captain’s chairs in row three as well as row two. That would improve rear passenger comfort almost as much as the extra height.
The high roof should also make it easier to get back there. The extra height gives passengers more headroom but also leaves more space to fit around the seats and negotiate your way back there. While Hyundai didn’t show this example, it would likely make for a better vehicle for those with accessibility needs.

The basics don’t seem to have changed, though, just the roof. That means sharp new styling with multi-tier headlights. The Korean version will have four cylinders and hybrid power, unlike the current 3.8-liter V6. That means up to 334 horsepower and better fuel economy than the old model, not just good looks.
No word on this one making it to the US, but, well, don’t expect it. Despite the high number of tall Americans, we don’t seem to get many special vehicles like this one. At least not from the factory.
